Match reports 16th& 17th May - Cup Final Weekend

Under 9s Cup Final

The under 9’s faced Chadderton Park Eagles on Saturday in the Subsidiary cup final at Siddal Moor. Roach dominated the match from the start and after just 2 minutes Matthew Royle saw his first shot at goal go just wide of the mark. Roach continued to dominate and almost took the lead when Jordan Parr hammered the ball from the half way line but it was well saved by the Chadderton keeper. Roach remained on the offensive and played some superb attacking football but then with 5 minutes of the half remaining, Chadderton scored making the half time score 1 -0. The second half saw Roach once again the stronger side and despite numerous great efforts from Ethan Littler, Dean Hussain, Adam Grimshaw and Matthew Royle they couldn't find the back of the net but then after 20 minutes Matthew Royles corner took a slight deflection and went in giving Roach the equalizer they deserved and forcing the game into extra time. Extra time was much the same story, with Roach always on the attack but the after 2 halves the score remained tied and the outcome would be decided by a penalty shoot out. Chadderton failed to find the back of the net with any of their 4 penalties, 3 of them being superbly saved by keeper, Chris Brown. This meant that Roach's 2 excellent penalties by Ethan Littler and Dean Hussain were enough to win them the Cup. The win capped off an excellent season that has seen the under 9s win the plate competition in Blackpool and secure promotion into the top division.

Under 10’s Cup Final

The under 10’s played Rossendale Valley United in the cup final on Saturday, and played some fantastic football to win the game and lift the trophy. Roach went a goal behind early on in the game, but quality showed through and four goals from Kieran Hill, Ethan Wade-Young and a double from George Rowley made the game safe. Rossendale did grab a goal back, but with a 4-2 score line, Roach were the winners.

Under 14’s Cup Final

The under 14s entered the main cup final in confident mood after disposing of two of the top 3 teams in the league along the way. On a big pitch the first half was a nervy affair as both side struggled to settle down. The second half saw Roach on top and creating a series of half chances without really testing the Beechfield keeper until a deep cross from Dave Stewart was swept home at the back post by Kieran Kelly. Roach looked extremely comfortable as they looked to see out the final five minutes, but with just three minutes to go a ridiculous decision by the ref allowed Beechfield to equalise from a free kick. Extra time was even as both teams faded and looked tired, and it was another disgraceful refereeing decision that decided the game when a blatant two footed high tackle on a Roach player went unpunished and seconds later the ball was slammed past Roach’s keeper from fully 30 yards. Roach created enough chances to draw level but it wasn’t to be and the game was lost 2-1. An excellent team performance from the lads who gave everything and but for some outrageous decisions given against them they would have won. Man of the match was awarded to Liam Mottershead whose passing and tackling was superb throughout.

Under 17’s Cup Final

The under 17’s travelled to North West Counties ground Atherton LR to face League Champions Pennington in the final of the main cup on Sunday. Roach had beaten their opponents both times in the league this season, so the encounter was always going to be a tight one. On a heavy pitch, and with the rain bouncing, the game was stalemate at the interval, but in the second period Roach were awarded a penalty which Jason Pilkington duly converted. Pennington got a goal back and the game went to extra time. A great move from Roach saw them take the lead again when Aidan Maggs headed into the corner, but just ten minutes from the end, Pennington again equalised, and at 2-2 the game went to a penalty shoot out. The ‘five per team’ were taken, and it went to ‘sudden death’ and on the ninth attempt, Pennington scored, Roach didn’t and the cup went to Pennington. Roach’s centre half & goal scorer, Aidan Maggs was named the player of the match by the League Committee representatives.

Match reports 2nd & 3rd May

Under 9's

The under 9's hosted Chadderton Grasshoppers Green on Saturday. The first half started off a bit slowly but before long Roach found their form and 10 minutes in, after picking up the ball at the half way line and making a great run, Dean Hussain saw an opportunity and thundered home a superb goal. Chadderton were denied any chance of equalizing by Roach's strong defence and it remained 1 -0 at half time. The second half saw an even more determined Roach and it wasn't long before Matthew Royle's corner was volleyed in by Corey Marsh. Chadderton were then awarded a penalty which they scored making it 2-1 and they looked like they could get back into the game but again, Roach's defence and goalkeeper, Chris Brown made it impossible for them to score. Roach then continued their onslaught and Johhny Rand headed home a 3rd goal followed closely by a 4th  from Kai Miller and with just minutes remaining another corner by player of the match Matthew Royle was headed past the keeper by Dean Hussain making it 5-1 and another convincing victory for Roach.

Match reports 25th & 26th April

Under 9's

The under 9's played host to Pennine Juniors B on Saturday. Roach started strongly and opened the scoring after 5 minutes when a great ball in from Ethan Littler was put away by Matthew Royle. Roach continued to dominate the game and just 5 minutes later, Dean Hussain gave them their second, and then Kai Miller scored a great goal moments before the half time whistle taking Roach into the break 3 - 0 up. The 2nd half saw a more determined Pennine on the offensive and they scored within the first few minutes but Roach were quick to respond and after a great run, Ethan Littler spotted an opportunity and blasted home a superb goal from 15 yards out. A Strong Roach defence kept Pennine at bay for the rest of the game and with just minutes remaining a shot by Matthew Royle rebounded off the post and was slotted home by Ethan Littler giving him his second goal and a 5 - 1 victory for Roach. Adam Grimshaw was awarded Player of the match for his superb defensive play.

Under 16's

The under 16's travelled to North Walkden and romped to a 9-2 victory. Tom Warwick started the rout with a great run and finish then Marcus Roberts chipped in with two quality strikes before Jack Kyle nodded in from close range. Walkden scored with a long range cross come shot to pull one back for the hosts. After the break it was much of the same with Roach outplaying their opponents and goals from Harrison Reeve 2, Warwick with a second, Adam Thomas and Danny Banks sealed the win, Walkden scoring a late consolation with a penalty after a rash challenge from player of the match Sean Burril, who was otherwise superb on the day.

Match reports 18th & 19th April

Under 17's

In one of the best games of football of the season, the under 17's came away empty handed after a 3-2 defeat to top of the table Elton Vale. On a beatiful playing surface, and in scorching conditions, both teams played some excellent football and were a credit to the game. The home side Elton took the lead on the half hour mark, but ten minutes later a perfectly crafted free kick by Brett Rostron found the head of Aidan Maggs, who dropped the ball into the path of player of the match Jason Pilkington who looped the keeper to level the scores. It stayed 1-1 until the second half until Vale again took the lead. This then saw Roach's best period and the visitors created several chances, finally getting their reward when Maggs found himself in the box again and made no mistake slotting it past the keeper. As both teams tired in the heat, mistakes were made and the game became very stretched, and it looked like the points were going to be shared until the last minute, when a moment of individual skill bey a Vale player saw him beat two players and win the game. Both teams embraced at the end and despite being exhausted, knew that they had been involved in a classic game of football.

Open Age

The open age team travelled to Ladybridge on Saturday, and in red hot conditions played out a 3-3 draw. Roach were guilty of throwing away the three points. They were 2-0 ahead at half time, courtesy of a Lee Clayton header, and a great finish by Danny Wolstenholme, but immediately from the restart, the home team pulled one back. Roach struggled with ther shape for twenty minutes or so, but Craig Woodall ponced on a loose ball and made it 3-1 to regain the two goal cushion. As Roach tired towards the end and lost concentration, Ladybridge scored a second on seventy minutes, and in the final minute of the game, another lapse in concentration allowed a loose ball to fall to a Ladybridge player and he put it in the bottom corner to seal the draw and a share of the points.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 11th & 12th April

Under 17’s

The under 17’s lost only their second game of the season on Sunday when they travelled to Egerton. Roach had only conceded 15 goals all season going into this game, and were on the back of a run of four clean sheets, but it all went wrong as they went down 5-2 on an awful playing surface. Egerton took the lead after just one minute when a back pass from the Roach full back crept past the keeper for an own goal, but From then on though, it was one way traffic with Roach completely dominating the game, but not taking their chances. That was until Robert Leyden found the equaliser on the half hour mark. At 1-1 starting the second half, the visitors were confident that the game could be won, but as the clock ticked, anxiety crept in, nothing was working, and in a mad ten minute spell mid way through the half, Egerton took the initiative and scored three goals to make it 4-1. Roach pulled one back through Jamie Diamond, but a ‘bad day at the office’ was completed, when Egerton scored a fifth in the last minute to put a massive dent in Roach’s title hopes.

Open Age

The open age team travelled to Astley Bridge on Saturday, and it was more of the same as the Heywood team played superb football in the first half and then capitulated in the second. Roach took an early lead, but the visitors equalised to make it 1-1 at the interval. Then in the second period as soon as the home side took the lead, Roach seemed to lose belief and Astley went on to score three more goals to win the game 4-1.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 4th & 5th April

Under 17’s

The under 17’s were at home to Atherton on Sunday, and due to holidays, had only eleven players to play the full ninety minutes. The eleven though, stood up to the mark and earned a comfortable three points to keep their title push on track. Roach started well, and created early chances and after twenty minutes, Robert Leyden got on to the end of a great through ball and slotted past the oncoming keeper. Ten minutes later, after some great work down the channel, Andrew Illingworth picked out player of the match Danny Wolstenholme on the edge of the box, and the striking midfielder hit a first time thunderous shot into the corner of the net. After the break, the home side came straight out of the blocks and Lee Maclean, who was excellent throughout, scored two goals in three minutes to put the game safe. From then on in, Roach were relaxed and played some great one and two touch football, and when they were awarded a penalty five minutes from time, Aidan Maggs stepped up to make it 5-0. The match was played with a great spirit and both teams were a credit to the game.

Open Age

The open age team travelled to Accrington on Saturday, and played out a strange game of football, where they played some of their best football of the season, yet came away with nothing after a 4-1 defeat. Accrington scored in the first minute after a one on one with the keeper. Roach scored in the second minute, courtesy of Andy Cain who converted a penalty after Lee Clayton was pulled down in the box, and then despite Roach being the better team, by the half hour mark, the home side had scored three more goals to make it 4-1, all of the goals coming from a combination of the two front men who were too quick for the Roach centre backs and got behind them on each occasion. The second half was a bit of a non event. Accrington sat back and consolidated their lead, and Roach could not find the pass that would open them up. Steve Cass was named player of the match for his non stop work in the centre of the Roach midfield.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 28th & 29th March

Under 16’s

The under 16's entertained league leaders and Lancashire cup winners Radcliffe Borough on Sunday and can count themselves very unlucky to come away with only a point in a 2-2 draw. In a first half played at an incredible tempo, honours were even in everything but the score line with Radcliffe scoring one on the counter attack and a second through a goalmouth scramble, but Roach are now showing a real determination and a genuine belief that they deserve to be up there with the best when the honours are handed out. The home side came firing out of the blocks in the second half and Radcliffe simply could not handle them, Adam Thomas pulled one back ten minutes in with a great finish across the keeper after a trademark through ball from Tom Warwick, and so ensued twenty minutes of Roach pressure with Harrison Reeve winning everything in centre midfield and Danny Banks dropping deep and giving the Radcliffe back four a torrid time. Banks was fouled on the edge of the box and got up to smash a low drive past the keeper to level the scores and from this point on there was only one team in it. Jack Kyle was denied a blatant penalty when after rounding the keeper he was tripped by him, with the referee choosing to warn Kyle for diving, and the Radcliffe keeper pulled off an astonishing point-blank save from Banks in the final minutes. The whole team were superb on the day but player of the match was Harrison Reeve for completely dominating centre midfield for the whole game.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s travelled to league leaders and last season’s champions Pennington on Sunday, and after being the first team to beat them in two seasons earlier in the season, Roach had a benchmark to meet. Roach started well, completely dominating the first ten minutes, and when they were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute, Jason Pilkington stepped up to give Roach the lead. The home side were reduced to ten men shortly afterwards and Roach continued to dominate. In the second period, Pennington came at the visitors, looking for the equaliser, but Liam Kefford in the Roach goal was solid, putting in a perfect performance, and the back four of Matthew Smethurst, James Sweetman, Adam Rowles and player of the match Aidan Maggs, who won everything in the air were superb. Towards the end, Roach were the stronger side, Pilkington bossing the midfield and strikers Craig Duffy & Andrew Illingworth scaring the home side to death. The game finished 1-0 to Roach and the three points were fully deserved as the double over the league leaders was achieved.

Open Age

The open age team entertained bottom of the league Ladybridge on Saturday and against a team that had not won a game all season, Roach were expected to win the game comfortably. Unfortunately though, throughout the game, Roach’s football and their desire to win was not good enough and certainly not up to the standard of the past few weeks, and when the visitors got a goal, they found the belief that they could win the game and raised their spirits enough to keep Roach and bay and subsequently win the game 1-0. Nick Dawson was named player of the match for a solid performance in the centre of the Roach defence.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 21st & 22nd March

Under 9’s

On Saturday the under 9’s faced league leaders Woodbank in a top of the table clash. After a fairly even start to the game, after 10 minutes Woodbank had a good shot parried by keeper Chris Brown who could then only watch as a Woodbank player popped up for an easy tap in. This spurred Roach into life who from the restart had a good attacking move which resulted in a corner from which Ethan Littler's header flew just over the bar. Five minutes before the break, Roach were awarded a penalty which unfortunately went just wide of the mark and Roach went into half time 1-0 down. The second half saw a more determined Roach go straight on the offensive gaining another corner which again was headed just over the bar. 5 minutes later a good run by Dean Hussain resulted in him being scythed down in the box giving Roach another penalty which player of the match Mathew Royle hammered home levelling the score. Roach continued to press and Hussain was once again brought down, this time just outside the area and was awarded a free kick which he took himself but saw his shot go just over the bar leaving the final score 1 -1.

Under 17’s

In incredibly windy conditions, the under 17’s played host to Great Lever in the quarter final of the main cup on Sunday. From the start, Roach were in full control of the game and after 25 minutes Jamie Diamond put the home side ahead with calm & controlled finish. It remained 1-0 at the interval despite Roach creating many chances. Craig Duffy led the front line for Roach and worked tirelessly, creating space for Diamond & player of the match Illingworth to get behind the Lever defence. Just before the hour mark, Illingworth doubled Roach’s lead, and despite the visitors staging a response, keeper Liam Kefford was solid in the Roach net. Five minutes from time, Roach sealed the semi final place as first Diamond, and then Illingworth who was awesome throughout, both netted again to make it 4-0 to Roach.

Open Age

The open age team travelled the short distance across Heywood to Brunton Park for a local derby with Rochdale St Clements on Saturday, but came away empty handed after a very disappointing 2-0 defeat. The game was flat & lifeless for much of the time and roach never seemed able to step up and take the initiative to win the game, allowing their local rivals to take the three points and win the game.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 14th & 15th March

Under 9’s

The under 9’s progressed comfortably to the final of the subsidiary cup on Saturday when they faced Walshaw Whites in the semi. The first 10 minutes of play saw chances for both sides but it was Ethan Littler for Roach who opened the scoring. Walshaw then had a couple of chances to score but some fine goalkeeping by Chris Brown kept them at bay. Roach dominated much of the second half and their efforts were rewarded when Dean Hussain was given a free kick 20 yards out which he took himself and placed it perfectly over the keeper into the roof of the net. Roach continued to dominate and player of the match Kai Miller played some superb football and Roach managed to increase their lead by way of a superb goal by Dylan Wood. Then just seconds before the final whistle a mistake by Walshaw's defence resulted in an own goal making it 4-0 to Roach and a well deserved place in April's final.

Under 14’s

The under 14’s got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Bolton Lads Yellow. Roach played some excellent passing football and some of their moves were a joy to watch at times as time and time again they cut through Bolton’s back line. Roach found themselves 1-0 down at half time after totally dominating the game. The second half started brightly with a slick move being finished by Ryan McSweeney, Top scorer Jack Greenhalgh then made it 2-1. Although Bolton equalised against the run of play Roach never looked in trouble and Matty Bell added an excellent third. Greenhalgh got another two and Sam Bishop rounded off the game to make it 6-2 in Roach’s Favour. An excellent team performance from the lads but player of the match went to Jack Greenhalgh who once again was superb throughout and grabbed a hat trick for his troubles.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s travelled to Great Lever in Bolton and kept their title hopes alive with a convincing 3-0 win. Roach started well, but despite dominating possession, could not find the back of the net. That was until a minute before half time and after a tactical formation change, a cross found the head of Craig Duffy and the busy striker looped his header over the keeper to give Roach the lead. The second half was more of the same, Roach bossed the middle of the park through Michael Lee, Tom Blundell and player of the match Brett Rostron, whose range of passing was fantastic and the goals finally came. Duffy scored his and Roach’s second and then five minutes from time, Danny Wolstenholme sealed the win with a solid finish. Roach play the same team at home next week in the quarter final of the cup.

Open Age

Playing in the Lancashire Amateur League, the Open Age entertained Old Boltonians on Saturday and fought hard for the well deserved three points that they took away from the game. In their now familiar 4-3-3 formation, Roach took control of the game from the start and completely dominated the first half creating several chances through Brett Rostron, Jamie Diamond & Craig Woodall, but unfortunately, the goal didn’t come. In the second period, and against the wind for the home side, the match was more balanced, but a corner just after the hour mark was delivered onto the head of Carl Crook and the centre half met it exquisitely and directed the ball into the net to give Roach a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later though, Bolton equalised and the game looked to be heading for a draw. Roach battled hard, defended well and created more chances, and when the ball fell to Danny Burns, he took it on the half volley and scored a fantastic goal to make it 2-1 and seal the points for Roach. Brett Rostron was named player of the match for Roach for an outstanding performance in the centre of midfield.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 7th & 8th March

Under 9’s

The under 9's played host to Walshaw Whites on Saturday and after suffering their second defeat of the season last week, they were determined not to be beaten. Both teams looked fairly evenly matched for the first 15 minutes of play and neither really looked like scoring but a chance came for Roach when a superb well placed cross by Kai Miller was met with a shot by Dean Hussain but this was well saved by Walshaw's keeper. Roach continued on the offensive and were rewarded 15 minutes in with an excellent goal from Dean Hussain. Walshaw were quick to respond to this and went on the attack but some great defending by Roach meant they were unable to equalize before half time. The second half was fairly uneventful and apart from a couple of shots, again neither side looked like scoring but in the dying seconds of the match Hussain got his second goal making it 2 - 0 for Roach. Player of the match went to Corey Marsh.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s entertained Egerton on Sunday, and in blizzardous, almost unplayable conditions, dropped valuable points, only managing to draw. The visitors took the lead, but when Roach were awarded a penalty, Jason Pilkington confidently converted his third of the season. Craig Duffy then put Roach ahead with an excellent finish, but the visitors levelled once again and then again took the lead. Jamie Diamond again levelled for Roach to make it 3-3 at the interval. In the second half, Egerton again took the lead, but Roach threw everything at their opponents and player of the match Michael Lee, who was awesome throughout scored Roach’s fourth. The home side then completely dominated, but could not find the winner and the game finished 4-4.

Open Age

The open age team travelled to league leaders Ainsworth on Saturday and in a fantastic game of football, were unlucky to come away empty handed. Ainsworth took an early lead, with one of three ‘freak’ goals and then on twenty minutes made it 2-0. At the interval, Roach knew that playing downhill on the extreme slope would be advantageous, and as they pushed forward, were awarded a penalty which Andy Cain duly converted. Tem minutes later, a great cross saw Danny Burns direct a header into the net to level the scores. Roach were the better side, but Ainsworth found the winner fifteen minutes from time and then defended their lead until the final whistle. Lee Clayton was superb in the Roach midfield, but Nathan Sedman was named player of the match for an outstanding display at right back.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports weekend 1st March

Under 13’s

The under 13’s played host to Moston Brook with a score to settle after losing 5-3 in their last meeting. Roach started off well with Latham coming close only to hit the side netting. Pressure from Roach paid off as a clever move from the midfield saw a shot saved, but Morris pounced on the rebound to make it 1-0. With Roach having most of the possession against the run of play, the visitors drew level and at the interval it was 1-1. The second half was a different story with Daley taking a wide run and finding the top corner to make it 2-2. A through ball saw Talbot slot a third. Moston were never in the game from then on and Ellis made it four with a goal mouth scramble. Roaches fifth goal came from a penalty which Ellis buried in the bottom corner. Sweet revenge and 2 wins on the run see Roach lift off the bottom of the table. Man of the match for a tireless performance was Nixon in defence.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s played out a drama filled game away at De La Salle in Salford on Sunday morning. Roach started the game well and were easily the better side, but after 20 minutes were reduced to ten men when Brett Rostron was given a straight red card for a two footed tackle. Roach re-shaped, but on the half hour went a goal behind. On the stroke of half time though, Craig Duffy who led the front line on his own, was brought down in the box and Jason Pilkington duly converted the spot kick to level the scores. As the second half started, Roach looked solid and Robert Leyden put them ahead with a great finish. Player of the match Leyden who had switched into the centre of midfield, then scored a second to give the visitors what looked like a comfortable lead. With just two minutes remaining, it looked all over, but De La Salle through everything at Roach, and a great move saw a great finish. A minute later as the home side continued to push, and with every single body in the box, De La Salle appealed for another goal as the ball did or didn’t cross the line, and as they argued & appealed, Roach broke away and with a one on one with the keeper, Jamie Diamond put the ball in the corner of the net to make it 4-2 to Roach and secure the three points along with keeping the ‘unbeaten since October’ run going.

Open Age

The Open Age team travelled to Old Boltonians on Saturday and returned to Heywood with three points after a fantastic 1-0 victory. The team have had a poor run over the last couple of months and the taste of success was fantastic for the lads. The visitors started well and created the better chances, but at the interval it remained 1-0. Roach had switched to a 4-3-3 formation for the game and the midfield presence of Brett Rostron, Lee Clayton and player of the match Craig Woodall, who was superb in the holding role, worked the Bolton players hard. Max Law was belligerent and never stopped working the opposition back four as the most forward striker down the centre, and Roach’s  back four, bossed by Steve Cass at centre half were as solid as in any game this season. On the hour mark, Roach were awarded a free kick outside the box. Rostron played a cute ball in to the channel, which was turned inside for Clayton to strike a fabulous shot into the back of the net. The home side tried to recover, but Roach were too strong and continued to dominate. The score line could have been heavier and more convincing, but Roach were satisfied with 1-0 and celebrated a win which they can now build on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 21st & 22nd February

Under 9's

The under 9's faced Pennine Juniors B away on Saturday. Things started badly for Roach when in the first 2 minutes of the game they were caught off guard and Pennine broke through the Roach defence and opened the scoring. They were very quick to respond though and just moments later a corner from Matthew Royle was put away by Dylan Wood. The game carried on at a fast pace and just 2 minutes after Roach's equalizer, Pennine went in front again when the Roach defence were once again caught napping. But again, Roach acted quickly and Matthew Royle scored the equalizer. Roach looked a bit more lively in the second half and they took the lead early when a great ball in from Adam Grimshaw was hit home by player of the match Corey Marsh and Ethan Littler almost made it 4 for Roach when his excellent strike was well saved by the Pennine keeper but then Dean Hussain played a superb volley into the back of the net making it 4 for Roach. Roach continued on the offensive, and with just moments to go Dylan Wood headed home his second goal making it a convincing 5 - 2 win for Roach.

Under 13's

The under 13's travelled to Unsworth after a long break due to the recent spell of bad weather. Roach started well moving the ball through mid-field to Daley up front who had several shots on goal but could not find the back of the net.Unsworth had very little of the ball and with only one shot on goal the teams were 0-0 at half time. The second half started very much the same with Roach on top. A mistake between Unsworths keeper and a defender saw Ellis pounce on the ball and slot the ball home to make it 1-0. Unsworth were then awarded a penalty and made it 1-1, just minutes later they broke through Roach's defence to beat keeper Rand and make it 2-1 unsworth. Good running from Latham saw Ellis through to score and draw level at 2-2. With 15 mins to go Unsworth came close to scoring but a solid defence led by Nixon kept them out. Again passing from a clever mid-field move saw Ellis break through skip around the keeper to complete his hat-trick. It was a well deseved win with goal scorer Danny Ellis receiving the man of the match.

Under 16's

The under 16's took on Pendlebury White away on Sunday and came away with a 5-3 victory. Two early goals from Adam Thomas and Tom Warwick had a negative effect on the team as players switched off from their roles and expected it to be an easy win. Pendlebury levelled the scores and it was only thanks to a stunning save by Dominic Kay from a penalty that honours were even at half time. In the second half though, Roach got their focus back and a superb solo effort from Jamie Byrne set the ball rolling, followed by a header from Harrison Reeve and after winning a penalty, player of the match Warwick stepped up to hammer the ball home and put the result beyond doubt. Pendlebury took advantage of poor concentration by the roach rearguard to score a third consolation goal with only seconds remaining.

Under 17's

The under 17's travelled to Astley Miners on Sunday & made it five wins in five matches with a 2-0 victory. Roach started well and created plenty chances, but untypically, couldnt finish them. That changed on the half hour mark when a move that started from the goalkeeper ended up in the path of leading goalscorer Jamie Diamond, who rounded the keeper and slotted home to make it 1-0. The visitors were always in control and played some suberb football throughout the midfield, in particular, player of the match Brett Rostron, who along with his central midfield partner Tom Blundell, ran the centre of the park. The one goal margin remained until 15 minutes from the end, when Roach were awarded a free kick 30 yards from goal. Blundell stepped up and curled a fantatic shot into the goal to make it 2-0 and seal the three points for Roach.

Open Age

The open age team entertained promotion chasers Ainsworth on Saturday, and left the pitch with their heads held high despite losing the game 2-0. There was nothing between the two teams and only one goal seperated them for most of the game. Roach worked hard, created chances and defended well, along with striking the crossbar, courtesy of a Lee Clayton 'rocket'. Adam Kennedy was named player of the match for his tenacity and energy at left back.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Match reports 14th & 15th February

Under 9's

The under 9's entertained Bridge Colts B on Saturday in the quarter finals of the Subsidary cup. Both teams started strongly and there were missed chances at both ends but Roach just had the edge and looked the team most likely to open the scoring. Matthew Royle had a superd shot at goal 10 minutes in and then his second chance came from a well placed cross from Kieran Lawler but both shots failed to find the back of the net. Another chance came soon after for Roach by way of a long free kick for Dean Hussain but this passed just wide of the mark and then moments before half time a corner from Dean Hussain was headed just over the bar. The second half began in much the smae way with both teams creating chances but some great defensive play by Roach, in particular player of the match Jordan Parr, allowed them to dominate the rest of the game and midway into the second half a well placed ball from Ethan Littler was headed past the keeper by Dean Hussain. Bridge, knowing that a draw would take the game into extra time gave it their all but thanks to Roach's strong defence and excellent goalkeeping by Chris Brown they were unable to equalise and the match ended 1-0 to Roach taking them into the semi final.

Under 16's

Roach under 16s returned to form with a 5-2 victory over North Walkden. Roach looked dangerous from the first whistle and never allowed their opponents any time to settle.  Goals came from Jack Kyle 2, Harrison Reeve 2, and Adam Thomas, and in a much improved performance Jamie Byrne was named player of the match for a solid display at the unfamilar position as right back.

Match reports 31st January & 1st February

Under 9’s

The under 9’s put last weeks defeat behind them and got back to winning ways when they met Westbury Wanderers at home on Saturday. Roach started off strongly and were unlucky not to take the lead early on when an excellent strike by Jordan Parr was saved, but then soon after, the visitors opened the scoring from a corner. Roach were quick to respond though and seconds later Matthew Royle equalized. Roach got the chance to take the lead when a free kick by Royle was headed into the post by Jordan Parr, but they were then caught off guard and Westbury took the lead again. The home side were once again quick to respond and a superb goal from Royle made it all square at half time. Roach were determined to get back on top and the second half saw them always on the offensive and thanks to some excellent play up front and a strong Roach defence, the ball was rarely out of Westbury's half, and 2 great goals from Oliver Dobson and Ethan Littler gave Roach a well deserved 4-2 victory. Player of the match went to Adam Grimshaw for his excellent defensive play.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s travelled to unbeaten league leaders & last season’s double holders Pennington on Sunday, looking to keep their title push on track. The home side took an early lead on ten minutes, but Roach played by fat the better football, and halfway through the first half, equalised with a great finish from Craig Duffy. Again, Roach dominated, but on the stroke of half time, a long ball caught out the Roach defence and they took the lead again. In the second period, it was about character, desire and the will to win, and Roach had it in buckets, playing football that would have graced any stadium. Ten minutes in saw a great move put Andrew Illingworth almost one on one with the keeper, and when he was pulled to the ground, player of the match Jason Pilkington who was outstanding in the Roach midfield, stepped forward and buried the spot kick to make it 2-2. Five minutes later, a magical turn & volley into the top corner from Jamie Diamond gave Roach the lead for the first time, and then solid defending at the death including a double save from keeper Liam Kefford gave them a more than well deserved three points with a 3-2 victory.

Open Age

With a makeshift team, the open age lads travelled to high flying Hesketh Casuals in Southport on Saturday and gave 100% effort despite coming away empty handed after a 3-0 defeat. Roach held the home side up until half time, but a minute into the restart, Hesketh took the lead and Roach were always chasing the game from then on in. Steve Cass was solid at the back having a great game, but his defensive partner Max Law was named player of the match for his control of the back four and assured calmness throughout.

Match reports 24th & 25th January

Under 9's

The under 9's suffered their first league defeat of the season on Saturday when they met Wardle Warriors A away. They were unlucky not to score in the opening minute of the game when a shot by Dean Hussain went just wide of the mark. The tables were soon turned though and Wardle had several shots but thanks to great defensive play and some fine goalkeeping by Chris Brown they were unable to score. Roach also managed to create several chances but were unable to find the back of the net and it was 0-0 at half time. The second half started badly for Roach with Wardle scoring after just 1 minute, things then went from bad to worse when they scored a second just 1 minute later. Roach, determined not to be beaten battled hard and were soon rewarded with a goal by Dylan Wood. The remainder of the match saw Roach mostly on the offensive and they looked sure to equalize but some dogged defending by the home side kept them at bay and it was 2-1 to Wardle at the final whistle. Kieran Lawler was named player of the match.

Under 11's

The under 11's played middleton Colts on Saturday and despite having got off to a poor start to the season Roach have gone on a seven match unbeaten run with six wins and one draw. The match started well for Roach with Trent Simms and Elliot Morgan linking up well in midfield, and the Heywood side soon established a 2-0 lead by half time. Jacob Collins was solid in net and the defence stood firm, and after the break Roach went 3-0 up then had a bit of a scare when Middleton rallied back to 3-2 but from the bench came George Beard with a thunderous top corner strike to ease the pressure to make it 4-2. Roach went on to win 5-2. Player of the match was Oliver Connolly Ashworth with a solid all round game.

Match reports 17th & 18th January

Under 9's

The under 9s returned on Saturday after an extended Christmas break, due to poor weather conditions, to face Wardle & Smithybridge in a subsidiary cup match. This was the third time the 2 teams had met this season and the 2 previous matches, both won by Roach, had turned out to be hard fought games, so Roach were prepared for another tough match. It certainly lived up to expectations, Roach seemed at little rusty at first and conceded a goal 10 minutes into the match. This appeared to wake them up and they battled on and were soon rewarded with a goal by Dean Hussain taking them into the break 1-1. The second half saw both teams pick up the pace and both had shots at goal, but neither found the back of the net and it was still all square at the final whistle forcing the match into extra time. Again, both teams battled hard but neither were able to score in extra time and the game had to be settled on penalties. After the first 5 penalties the score was 4-4 so it was sudden death, Roach found the back of the net with their next 5 and Wardle put home their next 4 meaning they had to score their next penalty but they were just off target making it a 9-8 victory for Roach and a place in the quarter finals. After returning from a long injury spell, Goalkeeper Chris Brown was back on top form and was named player of the match.

Under 14's

The under 14s entertained Bolton Lads Blue who had won all their league games leading up to this match including an early season 2-0 victory over Roach. The game started slowly and Roach were struggling to find any rhythm to their play and it was no surprise when Bolton took the lead with a bullit header that left keeper Rathbone with no chance. 1-0 quickly became 2-0 when the ball fell to a Bolton player on the edge of the box his shot was well saved by Rathbone but the Bolton attackers were sharper than Roach and it was followed in to an empty net. Slowly though Roach began to get a foot hold on the game and were rewarded when Captain Kieran Burns floated a free kick in that evaded everyone and sailed into the back of the net. The 2nd half started with Roach well in control with all their good play coming through the tireless Dave stewart in centre midfield. For all their neat football it was a long clearance by Stuart Nye from his own half that troubled the Bolton keeper and under pressure from Kieran Kelly he allowed the ball to bounce straight over his head and in to the goal. The game really picked up then with both side creating numerous chances to win the game. Roach hit the bar and had 2 goalbound efforts cleared of the line and the game finished 2-2. Another excellent game of football with a draw being a fair result. Man of the match was Dave Stewart who chased and tackled all over the pitch and who was instrumental in all of Roachs good play.

Under 17's

The under 17's travelled to Great Lever, a team above them in the league, and from the minute the game started, were on top of their game. Jamie Diamond opened the scoring for Roach after fifteen minutes and ten minutes later Andrew Illingworth doubled the lead. The home side pulled one back soon afterwards, but the in form Diamond made it 3-1 just before the interval. In the second period, the game went a little flat, but Roach were always in control and on the hour mark, Diamond completed a fabulous hat trick. As the game reached a slow finish, Robert Leyden earned applause with an exquisite chip over the keeper, and Illingworth rounded off a 6-1 victory with his second just before the end. Every player deserved a mention for an outstanding team performance, but striker Craig Duffy was named player of the match for his non stop work leading the line and creating the space for nearly all of the goals.

Open Age

The open age team entertained Oldham Hulmenians on Saturday and found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-1 thumping. Despite working hard all over the pitch, Roach struggled to find the final ball and despite player of the match Lee Claytog grabbing a goal just before half time, were powerless to stop the visitors striking six times.

Match reports 10th & 11th January

Under 14's

The under 14's went to high flying Beechfield Utd hoping to avenge an early season 8-1 hammering by the team currently sitting top of the league. Roach have improved vastly since then and they lined up in a confident mood. Roach began the game in complete control playing some excellent passing football with only the finish missing from their game. On their first attack Beechfield took the lead after an error down Roachs right hand side. However Roach were immediatly back on level terms when some neat interplay between Dave Stewart and Kieran Kelly set up Jack Greenhalgh who superbly lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper. Half Time and it only seemeed a matter of time before Roach were ahead. Beechfield came out in the second half a much stronger team and put some sustained pressure on the Roach back four who stood firm being superbly marshalled by the debut making Stuart Nye at centre half. With 10 minutes to go and with Roach having created all the clear cut chances Beechfield managed to score 2 goals in quick succession completely against the run of play. Roach didnt give in and got a goal back when Joe Leary followed in a Kieran Kelly free kick that struck a post. There was only a couple of minutes to go and Roach were throwing everything at Beechfield in search of an equaliser, twice having the ball agonisingly cleared off the line, but it wasn't to be and the game finished 3-2 in Beechfields favour. This was an absolute fabulous game of football that Roach at least deserved a point from. Man of the match could have gone to a few players but was awarded to the magnificent Stuart Nye who was outstanding in defence.

Under 17's

The under 17's progressed to the next round of the main cup with a hard fought 2-0 victory away at Prestwich Heys. Roach took an early lead through hard working midfielder Michael Lee and then dominated the majority of the first half, playing some excellent football and creating several chances, but failing to convert them as Prestwich defended solidly. The home side started to get back into the game and as the game went into the second half, the match became a typical cup tie, with both teams having chances. Roach though worked the harder, defended solidly and won the muddy midfield battle cortesy of Tom Blundell, Brett Rostron & Lee Maclean who all fought tirelessly, and with ten minutes remaining, Andrew Illingworth netted to secure the win & the ticket into the next round. James Sweetman was named player of the match for a fantastic disciplined display at left back.

Match reports 20th & 21st December

Open Age

The open age team travelled to High flying Rossendale on Saturday, and with only eleven players to choose from came back on the end of a 5-0 defeat. The scoreline though, did not reflect the character of the team as the bare eleven gave 100% for the whole 90 minutes. Danny Burns was excellent on the left of midfield, Steve Cass was commanding at the heart of the back three, but Nick Dawson who played his first full game of the season was named player of the match for his solid performance in the centre of the Roach midfield.

Roach played some of their finest football for a while, with three thunderous strikes by Trent Simms one of which almost broke the cross bar. The Heywood side were always in command with solid defending led by player of the match Dillon Astin. Jake Mansfield was superb in controlling the midfield and Roach won the game 9-2 to go into the semi final.

Match reports 29th & 30th November

Under 8’s

The under 8’s travelled to Unsworth looking to overturn last weeks defeat to the same team, but the home side started well and took an early lead. Roach though dug in and from a nothing chance, defender Curtis Rowlands hit the ball on the half volley into the top corner to level the scores. This lifted the visitors and just before the interval Daniel Wright put them ahead. After the break, Roach carried on much the same, joint player of the match Sam Mather Defending stoutly, and before long, the other player of the match Rowlands hit the ball from distance and extended the lead to 3-1. The two defenders had their work cut out at times but were magnificent at the back and as the home side pushed on, Roach hit them on the break and Wright scored his second. Despite Unsworth grabbing two late goals, Roach took all three points with a convincing 4-3 victory.

Match reports 22nd & 23rd November

Under 14’s

The under 14s produced their best performance of the season by beating Radcliffe Juniors 8-1. Radcliffe, who were previously unbeaten were absolutely swept aside by Roach’s excellent attacking football. Even with difficult weather conditions Roach still managed to play some superb passing and movement football that was unstoppable at times. The game was completely run by Ryan McSweeney and Dave Stewart in centre midfield who were both excellent throughout. Goals were scored by McSweeney who got a hat-trick, Jack Greenhalgh (2), Dave Stewart (2) and captain Kieran Burns whose whipped corner flew straight in. Man of the match was awarded jointly to Stewart and McSweeney.

As they came out for the second half, fired up to recover, the visitors scored from the kick off to extend their lead and then ten minutes later made it 4-0. On the hour mark, Roach made a double substitution and experimented with centre half, Carl Crook up front. The makeshift striker scored within a few minutes and could have even grabbed a hat trick, coming close and then hitting the woodwork. Player of the match Adam ‘Inchy’ Kennedy whom was outstanding at left back got into the box to score Roach’s second, but Radcliffe were the better side on the day and another late goal assured them of their 5-2 win.

In the second half Roach were under pressure and defender Bagshaw and player of the match Michelle Clarke along with keeper Barnes, had to work hard to keep the home team from doubling their lead. Daniel Wright eventually equalised for the visitors and as both teams went for the winner, and with minutes to go, Kilroy set up Harry Roache who smashed the ball into the top corner to claim all three points for Roach.

Under 9’s

The under 9’s played host to Wardle Warriors ‘A’ on Saturday. It was a shaky start for Roach with Wardle creating several chances and forcing Roach's defence to work hard but the roles were soon reversed and it was Roach on the attack and after a few near misses, Oliver Dobson scored a much needed goal for Roach. The second half was much the same with missed chances at both ends of the pitch but due to some excellent defending and goalkeeping from both sides the score remained unchanged, but then with 10 minutes left to play Dean Hussain scored, sealing the win for Roach and maintaining their unbeaten record this season. Player of the match went to Johnny Rand for his excellent midfield play.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s kept their title dreams alive on Sunday with an outstanding performance against Astley Miners. Some of the football played on a tough playing surface was awesome and the creativity came from joint players of the match, midfielders Brett Rostron & Robert Leyden who created relentless chances for the strikers and the midfield. Andrew Illingworth opened the scoring for Roach on four minutes and two from Danny Wolstenholme plus a screaming free kick from James Sweetman made it 4-0 at the interval. After the break, full back and Captain Matthew Smethurst volleyed to make it five, Craig Duffy scored on his debut and Jamie Diamond added two late goals to make it eight. The visitors scored a late consolation but Roach were more than worthy of their 8-1 victory and all three points.

Under 8’s

The under 8’s travelled to Bury Amateurs on Saturday & were lucky to go into half time 0-0 as the home side piled on the pressure throughout the first period. Keeper Niall Barnes and the Roach defence had to be on their game.

In the second half, with a change of formation, Roach took the lead through Daniel Wright and then as the visitors turned up the heat, the in form striker and player of the match scored another two to give Roach what looked like all three points. Bury though, didn’t give in, and in what seemed like the longest ten minutes ever scored three goals, one with the last kick of the match to level the score 3-0 and share the points.

Under 9’s

The under 9's faced unbeaten Wardle & Smithyridge on Saturday in what was a gritty and hard fought match. In the absence of Roach's regular goalkeeper due to injury it was sure to be tough. The tables were soon turned though when Wardle equalized. Roach continued to press and Royle quickly bagged his second goal, followed closely by a goal from Corey Marsh. Then moments before the whistle Royle got his hat trick. The second half saw Wardle and Smithybridge on the offensive and stand in goalkeeper and player of the match, Kieran Lawler was forced to make some great saves. Roach then made a break and Oliver Dobson scored making it 5 - 1. Wardle, determined not to be beaten, continued to attack and managed 2 more goals, but thanks to some excellent goalkeeping by Lawler, Roach kept their lead and it finished 5 - 3

Under 17’s

The under 17’s entertained Prestwich Heys on Sunday and completely dominated the first half and Andrew Illingworth gave Roach the lead on twenty minutes. In the second half Prestwich equalised on the hour, but ten minutes later Jamie Diamond restored Roach’s lead. Match reports 25th & 26th October

Under 9’s

The under 9’s faced Westbury Athletic on Saturday, started strongly and were unlucky not to score in the first few minutes with chances for Dylan Wood and Ethan Littler, but were then caught off guard and conceded a sloppy goal. Roach then responded with some great attacking football which resulted in a hat trick of goals by Matthew Royle followed closely by a goal from Corey Marsh taking them in to the break 4 - 1 up.  The roles were somewhat reversed in the second half and Westbury piled on the pressure and were rewarded with two goals in the first 15 minutes bringing the score to 4 -3 but Roach refused to lie down and a crucial goal from Dean Hussain extended their lead. Westbury had several shots on target but thanks to some tremendous saves by player of the match, Chris Brown they were unable to score. Then with 30 seconds left to play Kieran Lawler sealed the win with an excellent strike making it 6 - 3 to Roach.

Open Age

The open age team travelled to Bury GSOB on Saturday and put in an excellent performance but were unlucky to come away with nothing. The home side took the lead on the half hour, but a ‘world class’ ball from Danny Burns opened up the Bury defence, Jamie Diamond’s shot was saved and Aaron Olive headed the equaliser. Just before the interval, another defence splitting ball put Bury in danger and Brett Rostron forced the centre half into a mistake and an own goal giving Roach a 2-1 half time lead. The home side came out determined after the break and levelled again, and as the game looked like finishing level, they grabbed a late winner to deprive Roach of anything in a game where they deserved something. Adam ‘Inchy’ Kennedy was named player of the match for a fabulous performance at left back, where his contribution to the Roach attack was massive.

Match reports 18th & 19th October

Roach worked hard and defended well, player of the match Mitchell Clark along with Lee Bagshaw kept the visitors at bay. Roach got their breakthrough courtesy of a penalty which Sam Mather converted despite it hitting the bar and bouncing in. In the second period it was end to end football and Radcliffe once again took the lead through a free kick, only to be followed by a Roach equaliser scored by Daniel Wright who coolly rounded the opposing keeper. Wright could have won the game for Roach in the dying minutes when the visitors were awarded a second penalty, but the ball flew high and wide and the points were shared with a 2-2 score line.

Under 7’s

The under 7’s bounced back from last week’s disappointing defeat to earn a well deserved point away at Whitworth. Roach battled hard throughout the game and were very unlucky not to get the winning goal. The game finished 0-0 and the player of the match was awared jointly to Josh Brooks and Liam Mannion. The team and the club would like to give special thanks to Stuart and all at Crawfords Domestic Appliances for sponsoring this season’s kit. The team are pictured with Stuart and Coaches Andy Cain and Brett Rostron.

Under 8’s

The under 8’s played host to Walshaw Sports who last season had the better of Roach both times, but from the kick off the home side passed the ball around confidently and when they earned a penalty, Daniel Wright converted to make it 1-0. From then it was all Roach and from a super passing move Sam Mather side stepped the defender and doubled the lead. Walshaw created some good chances but keeper Niall Barnes was having a faultless game. Roach continued to pass and move and from a well deserved free kick, player of the match Harry Roche smashed the ball into the top corner from 18 yards out to give roach a 3-0 deserved lead at half time. The second half was very different with the visitors finding their form and pinning Roach back for long spells and despite some superb defending from Mitchell Clarke and Lee Bagshaw, the visitors scored two, but Roach were value for money, scored again and deservedly won the game 4-2.

Under 9’s

The under 9s were once again on top form when they played Rossendale United away on Saturday. Matthew Royle opened the scoring in the first five minutes from a great ball in by Ethan Littler. Roach continued to dominate the game and both Kai Miller and Ethan Littler were unlucky not to score. Dean Hussain then had a great shot saved by the keeper and Royle was quick to follow it up and bag his second goal, but then 30 seconds later Roach were caught off guard and Rossendale managed to pull one back, then within minutes Roach were once again caught sleeping and Rossendale equalized. Both teams came back strongly in the second half and thanks to some great play by Roach's defence and some superb goalkeeping by Chris Brown, Rossendale were unable to score. Man of the match was awarded jointly to Kieran Kelly and Mark McKnight who defended excellently all game

Under 16’s

The under 16's went up against Adlington on Sunday and ran out 3-2 winners in a fantastic game of football. From the whistle Roach were well up for it and their passing game saw them dominate the opening stages only to concede a soft goal against the run of play, but they kept their heads and earned a well deserved equalizer through Adam Thomas with an outrageous chest control and overhead kick. In the second half Roach carried on where they left off and their passing and movement was too much for their opponents, Thomas hit the post and chance after chance went begging until Luke Woodall hit the net with a delicate left foot strike from 25 yards. Danny Banks made it 3-1 not long after and Roach's wastefulness almost came back to haunt them as Adlington grabbed a second to make the last ten minutes a nervous affair when roach should have been out of sight long before. The player of the match was Thomas who put on a fantastic centre forward performance and was unlucky to end the game with only one goal to his name, as good as it was.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s exited the Lancashire County Cup on Sunday at home against Horwich St Marys in a game that was so one sided, if it had been a boxing match, it would have been stopped and Roach awarded the victory. From the off, Roach completely dominated the game and created chance after chance, but could not score. In the ten minutes before half time, an unbelievable period saw the visitors score three goals, and lead 3-0 at the interval. In the second period, Roach switched formation and with three strikers onboard dominated more than in the first half. Robert Leyden and Andrew Illingworth both scored to pull it back to 3-2, and despite corner after corner and the whole game being played in Horwich’s half, the visitors defended with nine men and deprived Roach of the equaliser. With every player forward in the final minute, Horwich grabbed a fourth to win 4-2 and go amazingly into the next round draw. Aidan Maggs who won everything in the air for Roach was named player of the match.

Open Age

After three consecutive victories and fourth in the league, the open age team entertained Bury GSOB on Saturday afternoon. Bury scored two early goals, but Roach pulled level courtesy of Ryan Allesandra and a great header from Danny Burns. With half an hour to go, Roach looked like the stronger side and could have made it four out of four, but a moment of madness saw a Roach player red carded and with ten men, the home side looked vulnerable. Bury exposed Roach and scored twice more to win the game 4-2. Lee Clayton was excellent in the centre of the Roach midfield and was named player of the match.

Match reports 20th & 21st September

Under 7’s

The under 7s were very unlucky to lose 2-1 away at Walshaw Sports. Roach were looking to bounce back from last weeks disappointing display and the lads were fantastic throughout. Roach passed and tackled much better than last week and they deservedly took the lead when Jamie Rand broke down the left wing and fired into the bottom corner. The points looked like they were heading home with Roach but Walshaw managed to scramble an equaliser with three minutes to go and with the very last kick of the game scored the winner. Football is a cruel game but Roach can hold their heads high after this much improved performance. Player of the match was awarded to Jacob Ngoy who worked tirelessly all game.

Under 8’s

Roach Dynamos entertained Bridge Colts at the weekend & started the game at a very quick pace. Early pressure resulted in a corner from which Sam Mather side footed into the net. Roach continued to attack & Daniel Wright scored from another corner. The wingers for the home side were impressive, Connor Sugden and Charlie Redford supplying numerous crosses and yet again from another corner Harry Roche put over a high cross that went directly into the goal. Bridge Colts started the second half better and only excellent defending from the impressive trio of Lee Bagshaw, Mitchell Clarke and player of the match Curtis Rowlands kept them at bay .With ten minutes remaining Roach began to take the upper hand again.  Harrison Kilroy came close on two occasions, but it was Daniel Wright that wrapped the game up with a thunderbolt in the dying minutes.

Under 9’s

The under 9’s played brilliantly when they met Chadderton Grasshoppers Yellows at home on Saturday. Dean Hussein opened the scoring in the first half from a well placed corner by Kai Miller and then scored his second from a corner. In the opening seconds of the second half, Oliver Dobson made it three.  Roach continued to pile on the pressure and another corner from Hussein was headed home by Corey Marsh. Roach then got a little bit complacent and despite some great goalkeeping by Chris Brown they conceded an own goal and then another, but Roach were worthy of their 4-2 victory. Player of the match was not awarded as all of the players played equally well.

Under 14’s

The under 14's progressed to the second round of the Lancashire county cup with a comfortable 7-1 win against Rochdale St Clements. Roach were always in control and were maybe guilty of taking their foot of the pedal in the second half allowing Rochdale to score a consolation. Goal scorers were Sean Bamforth who scored 5 excellent goals and Sam Bishop who added the other two. A much better showing by Roach after last week’s tame defeat, and the lads now need to build on this in the league.

Under 16’s

The under 16's kicked off their season with a 5-2 home victory over Castle Hill on Sunday. The first half finished 2-2 with goals from Tom Warwick and Danny Banks but in the second half Roach stepped up a gear and dominated the last half hour. Three great finishes from Danny McHugh, Jack Kyle and Warwick with his second saw Roach run out comfortable winners in the end. Player of the match was Marcus Roberts for his relentless work in the centre of the Roach midfield.

Open Age

The Open Age team played at home to league leaders Rossendale on Saturday, and against a team that took six points off Roach last season, and with players missing, the odds were stacked against the Heywood side. Roach though started well, and it was clear from the first minute that it was going to be a tough match for both sides, especially when the home side took the lead courtesy of a great free kick from Ryan Allesandra into the corner of the net. At half time Roach still had the lead, and as the visitors adjusted and went for the equaliser, Roach had to weather the storm at times, but stand in keeper and player of the match Max Law was outstanding between the sticks. The home side created chances as space opened up behind the Rossendale defence & should have killed the game off, but 1-0 was the final score and Roach were worthy of a hard earned three points and a well deserved victory.

Match reports 13th & 14th September

Under 7’s

The under 7’s travelled to Chadderton Grasshoppers Red in their very first league game. And against a team that have been together for over a year, the gap was evident as they brushed Roach aside with a 6-1 victory. Roach will need to improve if they are going to make an impression on this league. Cameron Orman was Roach's goal scorer and player of the match was awarded to Joshua Cass who was excellent throughout, and set an example of determination that the rest of the squad need to follow.

Under 8’s

The under 8’s travelled to Middleton Lads for their first game of the season and were under pressure form the start. Solid defending from Lee Bagshaw, Mitchell Clarke & Curtis Rowlands kept the home side at bay. Roach created some chances, but the Middleton keeper was on form. The home side then took the lead, and soon after doubled it just before the interval. In the second half, Roach pulled a goal back courtesy of player of the match Sam Mather, but as the visitors pushed on for the equaliser, Middleton scored again to seal the game with a 3-1 victory.

Under 9’s

The under 9’s had a fantastic start to their season when they visited Walshaw Whites on Saturday. A lively first half saw most of the team have shots on goal, but it was Matthew Royle who hit the target. The home side equalised within a minute, but Roach piled on the pressure and got a second through Dean Hussain after a great run. The visitors then extended their lead when player of the match Ethan Littler ran yards to score the third. In the second half Hussain hit his second to seal a 4-1 victory for Roach.

Under 14’s

The under 14’s started their new season with a dismal performance at Bolton Lads Blue. Roach were a yard off the pace and Bolton strolled to an easy 2-0 victory. The Roach boys were guilty of some very lapse play and never got going as a team. This was a very poor performance from the lads who must do better if they want to gain a respectable position this year.

Under 17’s

The under 17’s travelled to Elton Vale for their first encounter in the Bolton Federation League. On a perfect playing surface, Roach put together some excellent football and after just 11 minutes, Robert Leyden made a fabulous cross run to get on to a through ball, he rounded the keeper and slotted home to make it 1-0. The Roach defence were solid in dealing with the sustained aerial threat from Elton throughout the game and just after the interval another great move from the visitors allowed Andrew Illingworth to double the lead. Elton pulled one back soon after and as tiredness set in, Roach had to stay focused to hang on, but they did, and they picked up all three points with a hard earned and committed 2-1 victory.

Open Age

The Open Age team entertained local rivals The Stonemasons in the County Cup on Saturday, and in a great game of football, were unlucky to exit the competition. Stonemasons took the lead, but Danny Wolstenholme equalised on the half hour. The visitors took a 2-1 lead right on half time. In the second period, Stonemasons scored four goals in twenty minutes as Roach seemed to switch off, but the home side dug in and pulled three back courtesy of Nathan Sedman, Jamie Diamond & Alex Carr. The visitors stayed strong and scored again to win the game 6-4. Wolstenholme & Diamond were equally given the player of the match award for their relentless work up front for Roach.
