Match Reports - Season 2007-2008
Match Reports 26th & 27th April
Under 13's
The under 13's entered their last game of the season knowing that a win would make them league champions. Roach were up against a very well organised Bolton lads and grils team and found themselves 1-0 down after poor marking from a corner. Roach showed the character that has seen them through this season and equalised when Captain Kieran Burns whipped a superb cross straight into the top corner. As the second half went on Roach were applying all the pressure but just couldnt get their noses in front. The boys got a huge slice of luck when a Kieran Kelly cross was wickedly deflected into the Bolton goal. Roach were now in touching distance of the title and top scorer Kieran Kelly made sure of the points and the title when he slammed a 40 yard free kick into the top corner. There were jubilant scenes at the end as the boys hardwork and determination payed off and they were crowned Under 13's League Champions. Man of the match could have been given to a few players but was awarded to Kieran Burns who was inspirational in the centre of midfield producing a real captains performance.
Under 15's
The under 15's took on North Walkden at the weekend and despite the visitors only having ten men they battled hard and made it very difficult for Roach. Eventually though, the Heywood side proved they had too much for their opponents and would have won the game if walkden had played with twelve men.Goals from Jack Kyle,Tom Warwick,Danny Banks and a hat-rick from Adam Thomas saw roach romp to a 6-1 victory with an impressive passing performance. The player of the match was Jamie Byrne for a clever performance in the centre of midfield.
Under 16's
The under 16's travelled to Atherton on Sunday and yet again played their best football of the season against the newly crowned Count Cup winners. Atherton took an early lead, but Roach proved the better side, found belief & equalised through a fantastic header from player of the match Tom Blundell. Soon after, Andrew Illingworth showed his class and put the ball into the corner to give Roach a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately the game was abandoned before the final whistle, so Roach wait to find out if the result stands.

Match Reports 5th & 6th April
Under 13’s
The under 13’s left it late to beat Salford Juniors on Sunday’ eventually running out 5-3 winners. Roach are in bad form at the moment and really struggled to beat a team that they had previously beaten 12-1. Roach started well and were quickly 2-0 up with great strikes from the edge of the box from Kieran Burns and Ryan McSweeney. However, the lads sat back and took their foot of the gas allowing Salford to get one back and then equalise soon after. Only after Salford had gone 3-2 up with 8 minutes to go did Roach start playing the football again. The lads showed great character to come back and equalised through top scorer Jack Greenhalgh. Roach continued to press for the winner and were rewarded when Kieran Kelly headed home from a corner. Roach were now in control and they killed the game off in the last minute with Greenhalgh bagging his second of the game. Roach need only to win their last game next week to be crowned champions but they certainly made hard work of it today. The boys showed good character, and player of the match was awarded to the whole team for the spirit they showed when they were staring at defeat.
Under 16’s
After draws earlier in the season both in the league and the cup, the under 16’s looked to take the points off Boundary park on Sunday, but again the game finished level and the points were shared. Roach started well playing some excellent football and when Nathan Bates drove a cross in from the left, Jamie Diamond, who was superb throughout rose above the keeper to head home. The visitors pulled one back before the interval. In the second half it really was end to end stuff and either team could have won it, but both keepers were on top form and Roach’s stopper Liam Kefford was named player of the match for his part in this excellent 1-1 draw.
Open Age
The open age team entertained Old Blackburnians on Saturday & demonstrated just how much they have improved this season by taking a point from this game, even though they felt they should have had all three. Roach took the lead on 16 minutes, when Andy Cain’s looping ball into the box beat the keeper into the top corner. Ryan Constantine doubled Roach’s lead with an excellent finish not long after, but while still celebrating, the visitors caught the home side napping and pulled a goal back. In the second period, Old Blacks levelled the scores but as Roach once again took the lead, the new offside rules confused the referee and he disallowed a perfectly legitimate goal. The game finished 2-2 and Lee Howard who played in the centre of Roach’s midfield was named player of the match.

With Middleton's pitch double booked the game was switch to Heywood Community, Roach started off agianst the wind playing some neat and tidy football, Robbie Brown was winning every header in defence, Charlie Beswick playing on the right was putting some great crosses over but without Roach converting, chance after chance went begging and with the scores at 0 - 0 at half time, we were looking for a good second half , Roach started the second half at a fast pace again creating chances and a lovely ball over the top from Owen Whitehead to George Rowley who made a super flick to Charlie Beswick who got on the end to make it 1 - 0, the second goal was from a great freekick from Robbie Brown 2- 0, Middleton did get a late consolation with the game over by then, 2 - 1 was the final score.

Match reports for 15th & 16th March
Under 7’s
The under 7’s travelled to Radcliffe Borough for their last game of the season hoping to finish on a high & from the first whistle Roach were the stronger team with midfielders Sam Mather , Harrison Kilroy and Harry Roche working hard to win everything and creating some good chances. After ten minutes of total domination, Mather put the ball into the path of Daniel Wright who made his first chance count by slotting the ball into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance. From the restart Roach continued to attack and Curtis Rowlands’ defence splitting pass put Wright clear to smash home his and Roach’s second to give them a strong half time lead. After the interval Radcliffe came out fighting and pinned Roach back in their own half. Keeper Naill Barnes & defenders Lee Bagshaw & Mitchell Clarke worked hard but the home team eventually pulled a goal back. The visitors kept their heads and a great ball from Roche put Wright in and the player of the match went round the last man and coolly placed the ball past the keeper for his hat trick. Roche then scored Roach’s fourth with a low drive from outside the box to complete a fine performance and a 4-1 victory.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s travelled to Ramsbottom on Sunday and came away with all three points following an epic game of football. Roach had several chances in the first half but could not capitalise on them & against the run of play, the home side took the lead only for it to be cancelled out just before the interval by a cracking volley from Danny Wolstenholme. As the second period kicked off, the same player grabbed his second to give Roach the lead. Andrew Illingworth then made it 3-1 but Ramsbottom replied within two minutes. Not to be outdone Jamie Diamond scored two in eight minutes to give Roach what looked like a comfortable lead. Some of the football played by Roach was outstanding, Brett Rostron created everything in midfield and the back four had to defend well at times, with player of the match Daniel Biesty controlling the line. Ramsbottom did get two late goals, but Roach were more than worthy of their 5-4 win.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Match reports for 8th & 9th March
Under 9’s
The under 9’s visited Unsworth on Saturday & their sluggish start allowed the home team to take the lead after just five minutes. As the half went on though, Roach got stronger and settled down, playing some great football, and a great strike from the edge of the box from Tom Nixon brought them level. The second half started with Roach pressing for their second goal, and as chance after chance went begging it looked as if the game would end has a draw, but a great through ball from Ethan Wade-Young to Charlie Beswick who then finished by slotting the ball passed the advancing keeper gave Roach the lead and with time running out it looked like the winner, but a hopeful ball punted into the box was bungled in by the Unsworth striker to nick a share of the points with a 2-2 draw. This was good performance and the team are still undefeated in the league
Under 13’s
The under 13’s entertained bitter rivals Heywood Rangers in a game that could decide who wins the league title. Roach battled and fought throughout all of the game brilliantly and scored five superb goals to Heywood’s one. The goal scorers were Sean Bamforth who netted twice. Jack Greenhalgh, Kieran Burns and a cracker from Ryan Mcsweeney who beat two men and smashed the ball into the top corner from 30 yards. Every single Roach player was fantastic but player of the match was awarded jointly to Kieran burns and Liam Mottershead who controlled the centre of midfield from start to finish.
Open Age
The open age team followed last week’s victory with a home draw against Bacup United on Saturday. On a horrendous playing surface, which got worse as the game went on, the visitors took the lead on seven minutes, but within a minute, Marcus Smith equalised for Roach with a superb strike. Just before the interval, Nathan Sedman gave Roach the lead, but on the hour, Bacup again levelled the match. The middle of the park became unplayable and the Roach midfield worked tirelessly, none more than player of the match Conor Mullen who won everything. With ten minutes remaining, the referee abandoned the game due to the conditions, and the points were shared between two very muddy teams.

Under 15’s
The under 15s continued their impressive form on Sunday with a 6-3 victory over Farnworth. Roach came out of the blocks firing and took a two goal lead through jack Kyle and Adam Thomas before the visitors pulled one back from a corner kick. Roach took a one goal lead into the second half and with the wind that they defended against so resolutely in the first half soon made it 5-1 through another from Kyle and Danny Banks, both players completing a brace. Farnworth then enjoyed twenty minutes where they pulled two back and heaped the pressure on the Roach defence, but along with keeper Luke Woodall, who earlier saved a penalty to keep the score at 2-1, they stood firm and after some neat play through the middle of the park Jamie Byrne sealed the points with a neat finish in the dying minutes. The whole team played fantastic but Tom Warwick was named player of the match for bossing the game from centre midfield.,
Open Age
After some disappointing results recently, the open age team returned to winning ways with a solid performance and a 4-2 victory at home to Astley Bridge. The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes, but almost immediately, mark Woodall scored a cracker to level the scores, and then just before the interval, Jack Simpson scored his first of the season to put Roach ahead. In the second period, Roach continued to press and were always looking for goal. Ryan Constantine came off the bench and hit two, and despite the visitors getting a second, it was a game that Roach were determined to win, and they did. Max Law was tremendous in the heart of the Roach midfield, but Danny Burns on the left was named player of the match for a non stop performance that was instrumental in Roach’s win.

Match reports for 23rd & 24th February
Under 7’s
The under 7’s travelled to unbeaten Bridge Colts and started the game strong with midfielders Sam Mather, Daniel Wright and Harry Roche matching Bridge with strength and skill and creating some good chances. Bridge who have not been beaten all season dug deep and created some good chances, but solid defending from Lee Bagshaw, Curtis Rowlands and Mitchell Clark kept their efforts limited, until totally against the run of play and with minutes to go until the interval, Bridge grabbed a goal to go 1-0 ahead. In the second period Wright and player of the match Clark came close to equalising, but the opposing keeper was in fine form and before long the home side scored a scrappy goal to double their lead. Roach again came close, but Bridge scored a third to seal the game 3-0, a result that flattered Roach who deserved more from this game.
Under 13’s
The under 13’s got back to winning ways on Sunday with a thumping 11-1 victory over Broughton FC. Roach were always in control and were guilty of being somewhat over complacent in the first half. The goals were scored by Sean Bamforth (4), Joe Leary (2), Ryan McSweeney, Kieran Burns, Matty Bell, Liam Mottershead and Mark McKnight who scored his first goal in three years. Player of the match was awarded to Sean Bamforth who was outstanding up front and capped off a terrific display with 4 well taken goals.
Under 15's
Roach Under 15s got out of jail on Sunday with a 3 - 2 victory at home against Castle Hill. Ten men Castle Hill twice took the lead through good passing football, but Roach hit back immediately after each goal with great finishes from Danny Banks and Adam Thomas. The second half saw chances squandered by both sides and it was left to Adam Thomas to latch onto a route one kick from goalkeeper Dominic Kay and snatch victory in the dying minutes with a neat finish. Player of the match was Danny Banks for a tireless display upfront and in midfield.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s travelled to Seedfield on Sunday and with a full squad, took the game to the home side. Some of the early football was excellent and after just 13 minutes a great finish from Danny Wolstenholme gave Roach the lead. Jamie Diamond, who was tremendous in the Roach midfield, doubled the lead before the interval. Roach defended well and the centre back pairing of Adam Rowles and player of the match Lewis Forshaw looked solid until the home side pulled back a goal in the second half. The three points were on their way back to Heywood until the last minute, when an error allowed Seedfield to break, and a good finish made it 2-2 and the points were shared.
Open Age
The open age team travelled to top of the league Horwich Victoria on Saturday and played some of their best football of the season. The Heywood outfit were unlucky not to get something out of the game as for most of it, the score sat at 0-0 with Roach creating the better chances. It was only a corner and a good header that gave Horwich the 1-0 victory. The improvement in this side was for all to see as the back four worked as a unit, the midfield never stopped and the strikers all but took their chances. Nathan Sedman was named player of the match for a superb display on the right side of the Roach midfield.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Match reports for 16th & 17th February
Under 9’s
The under 9’s travelled to Woodbank on Saturday and the first half was a drab affair with not many chances being created by either team. The home side were awarded a dubious penalty but justice was done when the striker hit it wide, Roach then scored their first goal when Robbie Brown got on the end of free kick. After half time Roach started to play the football they are capable of with some great passing moves creating a lot more chances. Ethan Wade-Young had a solid game at the back and with Dylan Fearon in goal, a clean sheet looked likely. Charlie Beswick then slotted home the second goal after good work from Owen Whitehead and Tom Nixon then rounded off a great 3-0 victory.
Under 10’s
The under 10’s were in inspired form on Saturday when they beat Pearson’s Black 2-1 at home. Pearson’s who have not been beaten for the last two seasons could not cope with Roach’s one touch football and found themselves2-0 down within the first ten minutes, two great goals coming from Jake Mansfield and Sam Gibson. Elliot Morgan, Trent Simms, Dillion Astin, Ronan Daley and Thomas Fitzgerald were brilliant in the midfield playing some fantastic attacking football and Roach’s defence of Conor Sidebotham and Harry Morley along with keeper Cameron Burke made this the performance of the season for Roach who thoroughly deserved this win.
Open Age
The open age squad suffered their worst defeat of the season on Saturday when they hosted title favourites Howe Bridge. Roach started sluggishly and within fifteen minutes, the visitors were 3-0 ahead. Roach did create some chances but could not find the net, and by the interval Howe Bridge were 5-0 up. In the second period, the home side started the better side and pulled a goal back through Ryan Constantine, but in a scrappy end to the game, the visitors scored twice more to win the game convincingly 7-1. Steve Cass was named player of the match for Roach.

Match reports for 9th& 10th February
Under 7’s
The under 7’s welcomed Middleton hoping to make it back to back wins & from the off stared the brightest with midfielders Sam Mather, Charlie Redford and Michelle Clarke working hard to set up Harry Roche to coolly slot home to put them in the lead, Roach continued to press their opponents creating chance after chance and the pressure finally paid off when they were awarded a penalty which unfortunately was hit wide by Daniel Wright. In the second period, Middleton levelled the scores, but Wright made up for his penalty miss by chipping the keeper to restore Roach’s lead. Lee Bagshaw and Clarke defended every Middleton attack and when Roach were awarded a second penalty Wright stepped up again. This time the opposing keeper saved the kick and encouraged his team to attack which they did until they found the equaliser. The game finished 2-2 and Roache was named player of the match for his relentless work rate.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s hosted Boundary park in the quarter final of the cup on Sunday and were involved in an epic tie. It was a pure midfield battle with both teams creating few chances. The ones that the visitors did create were saved superbly by stand in keeper Brett Rostron. Roach didn’t take their chances and with just seven minutes remaining the visitors took the lead. The Heywood side showed character though, and in the last minute, Jamie Diamond equalised to take the game into extra time. A wicked own goal gave Boundary the lead again, but Andrew Bowe levelled again to see the tie go into penalties which the visitors just edged 6-5 to secure the semi final place.
Open Age
The open age team travelled to Rossendale Amateurs on Saturday and came away with their heads held high despite losing 2-0 to the top of the table team. Raoch played some fantastic football losing a goal either side of the interval, but felt ‘robbed’ as two clear goals were disallowed by the referee who did not have a fantastic game. Conor Mullen was outstanding in the centre of the midfield, but the player of the match was awarded to Marcus (Mally) Smith who never gave up the cause in the Roach attack and was close on more than one occasion.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Match reports for 2nd & 3rd February
The under 13's played host to unbeaten Moston Juniors in the quarter finals of the main cup. Roach had to shuffle their team as their regular centre half was injured. Moston, who are undefeated in over 2 years, were quick out of the traps and put Roach under some sustained pressure without really troubling Dave Stewarts goal. It was Roach who had the first real chance but Bamforth just fired wide from a corner. Just as Roach were beginning to get into the game a silly tackle in their own box gave Moston a penalty that was slammed home. Roach are a resilient team and fought back when Kieran Burns converted a beautiful free kick to level the scores. Roach thought they had seen the half out but were cruelly punished when a nothing cross was deflected into Stewarts goal by a Roach player. The second half was much like the first with all Roachs pressure coming on the counter attack. Dave Stewart was inspierd in goal pulling off some breathtaking saves and Kieran Kelly was superbly marshalling the back four. Roachs persistence paid off when on another counter attack the ball fell to Joe Leary who smashed the ball into the top corner from 25 yards. Roach were now on top but the game wasent over and with 10 mins to go and with a Roach player off the pitch recieving treatment for an injury Moston took the lead again with a great finish. In the end Roach just couldnt find the equaliser and they exited the cup on the back of a 3-2 scoreline. A great performance from the lads who really showed that they can hold their own with the big boys and have shown a vast improvement since last year. Man of the match could have gone to many players but was awarded to Kieran Kelly who was fantastic at centre half.

Match reports for 26th & 27th January
Under 7’s
The under 7’s played their first game in eight weeks against Westbury & started the game very strong with Sam Mather, Mitchell Clark and Daniel Wright winning everything in midfield. Roach had chance after chance, Charlie Redford and Harry Roche came close and Wright hit the bar, and the opposing keeper played his part in keeping the score 0-0 at the interval. Westbury came out fighting in the second period and hit Roach on the break several times but the attacks were soon brought to a halt by the excellent defending of joint players of the match Lee Bagshaw and Curtis Rowland who made sure the Roach keeper Niall Barnes was never tested. Roach’s breakthrough came when Harrison Kilroy started a great move which saw Wright run the length of the pitch, beating three players and laying the ball off to Mather who slotted home the only goal of the game and secured the 1-0 victory.
Under 9’s
With the wind behind them, the under 9’s started off playing some great football against Woodbank and within the first five minutes a cross by Charlie Beswick from the left allowed Robbie Brown to head home at the far post to make it 1-0, and from then on it was all one way and Ethan Wade-Young added a second direct from a corner. In the second period, it was more of the same and a corner straight from the training ground saw wade-Young score the goal of the game to make it 3-0. Roach’s keeper Dylan Fearon made a couple of saves to protect the lead and Beswick added Roach’s fourth. Woodbank did get a late consolation, but the Heywood side were back to their best in tough conditions and worthy of this 4-1 victory.
Open Age
Roach’s open age travelled to Oldham Hulmenians, and after defeating them earlier in the season, came away on the wrong side of a 3-2 score line. At half time it was 0-0, but the home side had created the better chances, and only solid goalkeeping from player of the match Andrew Light had preserved the score. After the break, Roach took the lead through a great finish by Ryan Constantine but within a minute, Oldham equalised. The home side then took the lead only for it to be cancelled out by Marcus Smith. It was looking like the points would be shared, but five minutes from time the home side scored to win the game.

Match reports for 12th & 13th January
Under 8’s
The under 8's entertained Walshaw Sports on a cold Saturday morning and triumphed for their second victory of the season. Roach went 1-0 down in the first half with by an own goal, but straight away fought back and were the better team for the remainder of the half. In the second period, the home side hit back with a great counter attack from centre back Ethan Littler who played a great ball to Kai Miller who slotted the ball away. Walshaw then had a great period, but player of the match Chris Brown, the Roach keeper was superb, and kept them at bay. The Heywood side then capitalised and a mistake from the away keeper cost them the match when Kai Miller slotted away his and Roach's second to win the game 2-1.
Under 13’s
The under 13's secured another three points with a well deserved victory over Fothergill Falcons. Roach again displayed an excellent display of attacking football and were well worthy of their 11-2 victory, despite being 1-0 down at one point. The goals were scored by Sam Kelly (2), Matty Bell (2), Ryan McSweeney (2), Joe Leary, Kieran Kelly, Liam Mottershead, James Steele and Sean Bamforth. This team are in great form at the moment and continue to improve with every game. There were good performances from Sam Kelly and the always consistent Liam Mottershead but player of the match was awarded to Ryan McSweeney who was excellent in centre midfield, controlling the play from start to finish, scoring two goals and being the centre of all Roach’s good work.
Under 15’s
After going down 5-2 to Swinton away last week Roach took the same team on at home in the return fixture and looked a completely different team from the kick off. On a heavy pitch their passing was accurate, tackles strong but fair and their attitude and commitment could not be questioned. Only their Achilles heel of squandering chances prevented them taking the lead as only one team looked as if they were up for it. The second half was a much tighter affair and the visitors took the lead when the referee ruled a contentious effort had crossed the line but Roach were not to be undone and with five minutes left on the clock Swinton cleared a corner and came out only for player of the match Redford Hull to chip the ball back into the box for Tom Warwick to run onto and finish superbly to level the score and take a point which is less than this team performance deserved.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s entertained Ramsbottom on Sunday, and on a heavy pitch, were involved in an absolutely classic game of football where both teams battled for the full match. It was Roach that took the lead on ten minutes, when Robert Leyden coolly placed a penalty into the bottom corner. Five minutes later it was the visitors who equalised again through a penalty. With their regular keeper injured, midfielder Brett Rostron stood in between the sticks, and pulled off a string of saves that kept Roach in the game. In the second period, Rossendale took the lead on the hour mark, but only after a superb save from Rostron, resulted in a point blank shot to his face that left him unconscious and bloody. The keeper duly recovered to play on, and despite Roach pressing hard, the visitors held on to take all three points. Rostron was named player of the match for an outstanding display in the Roach goal.

Sam Gibson opened the scoring after rounding the keeper for a tap in, and then after a good lay off from Jake Mansfield, Thomas Fitzgerald hit the ball from outside the box into the corner to double Roach’s lead. Two goals from Mansfield then sealed the 4-1 victory. All the players played their hearts out especially Harry Morley who was like a lion in defence.
Under 13’s
The under 13's remain unbeaten in the league after another impressive performance against Fothergill Falcons. Roach were missing two key players and regular left back Sam Kelly stood in between the sticks. The boys played some excellent football that the opposition just couldn’t handle and were well worthy of their 8-2 victory. Goals were scored by Jack Greenhalgh (2), Joe Leary (2), Kieran Burns (2), James Steele and Ryan McSweeney. The player of the match was given jointly to fullbacks Aidan McIlvenny and Sam Greenhalgh who were both superb throughout.
Open Age
The open age team travelled to league leaders Chew Moor Brook on Saturday and came away with their heads held high after a solid performance against a team who look like winning the league. The home side took an early lead on nine minutes after a controversial refereeing decision that caused uproar in the Roach camp, and then doubled their lead on the half hour after a mix up between two Roach players gifted CMB with an easy tap in. In the second half, Roach changed things about, but couldn’t penetrate a solid CMB defence despite creating several chances. The home side eventually scored a third to win the game 3-0. Midfielder Max Law was named player of the match for a stunning & tireless display in the centre of the Roach midfield.

Match reports for 24th& 25th November
Under 7’s
The under 7’s travelled to Walshaw this week looking for back to back wins, Both teams were up against it from the start with the bitter cold and rain witch made it hard of the young lads, but Roach dug deep and good wing play from Lee Bagshaw found Charlie Redford in space around the back to smash the ball into the roof of the net to put Roach in front. Form the restart Harry Roche and Daniel Wright combined well in midfield to cross for Sam Mather to put Roach two in front, The cold soon started to take hold, Roaches concentration slipped and Walshaw soon pulled one and then two back to make the score level. The second half was even harder for both team but for some strong defending from Curtis Rowland and Michelle Clarke and excellent keeping from Niall Barnes kept roach in the game. A good attacking move from the home team put them in the lead with ten minutes to go. Roach responded with with Curtis putting Sam through to finish the game 3-3. Player of the match was given to the full team for there effort in the very hard conditions.
Under 15’s
The under 15's went down 4-3 to Farnworth away in a muddy battle on Sunday. On a quagmire of a pitch Roach flew out of the traps and took the lead thanks to a neat finish under the keeper from Danny Banks. Great team play saw roach add a second with a great headed finish from Jamie Byrne but the home side dug in to finish the first half on equal terms. A long range effort from Luke Woodall restored Roach's advantage but with tired legs on a heavy pitch Farnworth went on to score two and take the points. Dominic Kay took the player of the match award for superb handling in difficult conditions for a goalkeeper but the whole team put in the performance they were asked for by the manager.
Under 17’s
The under 17’s travelled to Bury Juniors, and after terrible weather this weekend and four other games being played on the pitch before this one, it wasn't ideal for either team who both like to play football along the floor. A Bury corner led to a punch out by keeper Chatburn and a long ball over the top by Boyle set Hughes trough to make it 1 -0. Roach then had a goal disallowed after Taylor had touched it over the line, and as Bury attacked, the ball struck a Roach arm resulting in a penalty which the home side duly converted to make it 1-1 at the interval. In the second period and with confidence growing, Hughes struck three more times to seal his hat trick, his second a sweet volley from a tight angle, his fourth a tap in after the keeper parried the ball. As Roach sat on their lead, despite Chatburn making a string of saves, Bury scored twice again to make the final score 4-3 to Roach. Paul Houlsworth who moved from defence to midfield was named player of the match for a commanding performance throughout.

Match reports for 17th& 18th November
Under 7’s
The under 7’s started well at home to Pennine Juniors and within the first minute Sam Mather ran down the wing, dribbling around the Pennine defenders, only to be fouled just as he was going to shoot. The penalty was converted by Daniel Wright. Minutes later the same two players combined to give Wright his second. The visitors’ best spell followed, Roach conceding one goal but excellent defending by Curtis Rowlands and Mitchell Clarke ensured that Roach ended the half in the lead. Roach started the second half well, creating many chances. The third goal came from player of the match Mather who ran half the length of the pitch, finishing well as the defenders approached. Harry Roche worked well in midfield, hitting the bar with a well-struck shot and Lee Bagshaw was the first to react to the rebound and fire into the roof of the net. Roach continued to press for more goals, goalkeeper Niall Barnes almost a spectator and this was an excellent performance from the whole team. The final score was 4-1.
Under 9’s
After last weeks defeat to a controversial decision, the under 9’s had the opportunity to put it right and they did that straight from the off, the passing and the play was from boys years older than themselves. Roach totally dominated the match from start to finish; the first goal came from Robbie Brown after a great turn and a thunder bolt into the top corner. The second came after George Rowley who skipped passed two players to cross for Luke Bell to score and it was player of the match Rowley who scored the third goal again after a run down the wing he cut in and placed a screamer into the top corner. Luke Bell made it 4 - 0 before half time. The second half was much like the first with Rowley scoring his second and Roach's fifth , and despite the visitors getting a consolation, Roach were worthy of a 5-1 victory.
Under 10’s
The under 10’s played the return game with Chadderton Grasshoppers after a fine win against them last week. Chaddy played some good attacking football resulting in them taking the lead, but Roach responded well with player of the match Ronan Daley scoring the equaliser with a fine header and also forcing the keeper to make a great save to his left. The game continued to be open t with chances going to both sides and roach keeper Burke making good saves himself until he had to leave the field with a head injury. Sam Gibson stepped up between the sticks and kept Chaddy at bay for the last 5 minutes. This was a great performance by both sides and 1-1 was a fair result.
Open Age
The open age team entertained third placed Rossendale on Saturday afternoon and for the first twenty minutes looked the better side. The visitors though scored twice in five minutes to lead the game 2-0 at the interval. Again, Roach came out with intent and Ryan Constantine pulled one back. The story though was familiar from then on. As Roach pushed for the equaliser, the shape went and gaps appeared which allowed the visitors to score three more goals and take the points with a 5-1 score line that frankly flattered them. Jack Simpson was named player of the match for a gritty performance in the Roach midfield.

Match reports for 10th& 11th November
Under 9’s
The under 9's were looking to progress in the main cup, and despite dominating the first half they found themselves one down at the interval with Chadderton's only strike on goal. The second half was much like the first with Roach playing some great football, and the equaliser came from Charlie Beswick after great work in midfield from Luke Bell. Roach then took the lead from a deflected corner and with time running out the game looked over but a controversial decision gave Chadderton a penalty which they duly converted to equalise. In extra time, Roach pressed for the winner, but it was Chadderton who scored from a corner to progress into the next round with a 3-2 victory.
Under 10’s
The under 10's played in the cup against last year's runner's-up Chadderton Grasshoppers Red. Roach played some great defending football and with a solid performance from goalkeeper Cameron Burke Roach were lucky to go 1-0 up just before half time. Both teams came back out with only a win on their minds. Chadderton equalised but Roach battled to go in front again courtesy of a superb, left footed, rocket shot by Trent Simm. Roach battled through a fantastic game of football, and with only minutes left player of the match Conor Sidebotham hit a first class shot which no keeper could have saved to seal the game 3-1.
Under13's
The under 13's once again hit the opposition for 12 when they easily saw off Salford Juniors 12-1. Roach played superb passing football which the salford lads could not handle and time and time again created good goalscoring oppurtunities. On this form it is looking unlikely that anyone will be able to stop Roachs relentless surge for the title, they are currently unbeaten and with an impressive goal difference of plus 40.Goals were scored by K.Kelly(3), Burns(2), Bishop, McSweeney, Bell, Bamforth, Greenhalgh, Steele and a first league goal for vice captain Liam Mottershead. Player of the match was the superb Sam Kelly who was ferocious in the tackle and attacked brilliantly from his left back position, a great performance.
Under 15’s
On Sunday the under 15s welcomed back Danny Banks and Marcus Roberts from injury and the two played a big part in getting three points away at Castle Hill. Adam Thomas hit a brace with two great strikes one from a free kick and the other from the penalty spot to give Roach a two nil lead. Luke Woodall was superb in the net for Roach pulling off a great save in the first half preserving Roach's lead but slack defending allowed the home team to pull it back to 2-2, it was left to Danny Banks to go around the keeper outside the box and hit the ball into an empty net from 20 yards from a tight angle. Player of the match was Josh Smith who was outstanding again in centre half.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s travelled to champions Avro on Sunday, and came away on the back of a score line that flattered their opponents. At half time the game was deadlocked at 0-0 with both teams having chances. After the break though, Avro took the lead, but within a minute, player of the match Danny Wolstenholme scored an absolute blinder to level the scores. Then came a mad period for Roach. Four crazy mistakes allowed the home side to score four times in eight minutes. Roach were shell shocked and could not recover from this body blow, despite working to the end. Avro grabbed one more near the final whistle to win the game 6-1.
Under 17’s
With the under 17’s not having a game last week and a few dodgy performances previous, the Roach managers were looking for a good response from the lads against Walshaw, and they got it within the first two minutes when Jaime Hughes made no mistake to slide the ball home. It didn't take long for Roach to add a second through Hughes again. With Ryan Allasandra running the Walshaw defence ragged he fed the ball to Ryan Smith who scored the third. Allasandra's hard work paid off when he grabbed the fourth. Smith then set up Boyle to make it five before half time. Some good interchanges on the edge of the box led to Lewis Kershaw heading in from close range and then the same player got his second moments later when his gamble paid off to scramble the ball over the line. The visitors then pulled one back, and then had a penalty saved by Roach keeper Chatburn. Allasandra then got the eighth and a second Walshaw penalty was duly converted. Allasandra grabbed his hat trick, and then Jack Taylor scored the goal of the game with a near post header to make it 10-2. Paul Houldsworth was named player of the match for a brilliant display in the centre of defence.
Open Age
The open age team entertained Rochdale St Clements on Saturday in a reversal of last week’s derby at Brunton Park where the points were shared. This time though, it was Rochdale who took the points home. The visitors went 2-0 up with two goals in two minutes early in the first half. Roach then pulled one back when Andy Cain’s cross was wickedly deflected into the net. After the break, Rochdale extended their lead further only fore player of the match Ryan Constantine to score the goal of the game straight after. As Roach pushed for the equaliser, gaps appeared at the back, and the visitors capitalised on the situation with two more goals in a ten minute spell. Danny Burns then headed Roach’s third, but Rochdale struck again to win the game 6-3.

Match reports for 3rd & 4th November
Under 7’s
The under 7’s faced Bury Amateurs for the second time in two weeks looking to improve on last weeks game. Roach started very strongly and attacked from the kick off, Sam Mather working hard on the right wing crossing for Charlie Redford to slot home Roach’s first goal and the start they wanted. Hard work in midfield gave Roach chance after chance but good keeping from Bury kept the home team in the game. Roach continued to press and from a Roach corner Daniel Wright volleyed home to make it two just before the break. In the second half, the visitors came out fighting and they pinned Roach back. Solid defending from Curtis Rowland and Mitchell Clarke kept Roach in front but soon after Bury's pressure paid off winning them a penalty which Roach keeper Niall Barnes made an excellent save only for the ref to order a retake which was converted second time round. Bury were lifted and Roach were on the back foot. Bury won a corner and from that the ball found its way into the back of the net bringing the game level. Roach pressed on looking for the winner, but the goal just would not come, and then Bury hit Roach with two goals in as many minutes to seal the victory. Harry Roche picked up man of the match for an excellent performance in the Roach midfield
Under 9’s
Looking to repeat the performance from last week against Pennine Juniors ‘A’, the under 9’s started brightly with Robbie Brown and Owen Whitehead looking solid at the back and Kieran Hill and Tom Nixon winning every tackle in midfield then creating chances for the forwards. The first goal was a great strike from Nixon into the top corner leaving the goalkeeper no chance. The second soon followed after a great through ball from Hill to Charlie Beswick who slotted it through the goalkeeper’s legs. Roach started the second half slowly and Pennine scored two quick goals to draw level, but this kick-started the second half for Roach and Hill put them in front again. The same player then passed to Beswick to make it 4-2, and at the other end Dylan Fearon made a fantastic save to preserve Roach’s lead. George Rowley made a jinking run down the left and crossed for Beswick to score his hat trick and Roach fifth goal to win the game 5-2.
Under 10’s
The under 10"s played Middleton Dynamos without their usual keeper, but it made little difference as Roach went straight on the attack and made some good chances until Ronan Daley opened the scoring with a nice header. Keeper Thomas Fitzgerald then made a fine save before player of the match Jake Mansfield made it 2-0 to Roach. Straight after the break Connor Sidebotham scored a long range free kick before Sam Gibson scored the fourth. Middleton got a consolation goal but the game was over with Roach winning 4-1.
Under 13's
The under 13's continued their impressive winning streak with a thumping 12-0 victory against Broughton FC. Roach produced a superb attacking display and should have scored more than the 12. Goals were scored by Kieran Kelly (3),Sean Bamforth (2),Sam Kelly, Joe Leary, Ryan Mcsweeney (2),James Steele and Dave Stewart. The goal of the game was scored by Captain Kieran Burns with a sweet strike in the top corner. Player of the match was awarded to Goalkeeper Dave Stewart who was given a run out on the left wing and capped an excellent display with a deserved goal, his first for the club (not sure about the celebration though). An excellent all round team display with these boys not looking like ever losing at the moment.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s entertained Atherton at the weekend, and went behind after fifteen minutes following a scramble from a corner. There was then some controversy following an Atherton goal scored after the referee had stopped play, but the Atherton players sportingly allowed James Sweetman to score to negate the goal. Before the interval, a mistake at the back allowed the visitors to go 3-1 ahead. In the second half, Roach looked the more determined side and never gave up; changing their shape more than once in search of a goal, but Atherton defended superbly, and kept them at bay. As gaps appeared due to the need for a goal, Atherton scored again to win the game 4-1. Josh Greenhalgh was named player of the match for a superb display up and down the left of the Roach midfield.
Open Age
In their first local derby of the season, the open age team travelled to Brunton Park to play Rochdale St. Clements in a league game. The visitors started well and after seventeen minutes, Alex Carr scored a great goal to give them the lead. St Clements dug in and just before the interval levelled the scores. In the second period, it was the home side that started stronger, taking the lead on the hour mark and then extending it five minutes later from the spot kick. Roach though were defiant, and switched to a more attacking formation. Mark Woodall made it 3-2 and then five minutes from time, when Roach were awarded a penalty themselves, Woodall converted to make it 3-3 and grab Roach a share of the points in this hotly contested game. Steve Cass was named player of the match for a cool display at the heart of the Roach defence.

Match reports for 27th & 28th October
Under 7’s
The under 7’s welcomed Bury Amateurs this week and started strong with chances coming early for Harry Roche and Sam Mather, but the visitors held their nerve and defended well creating some good chances and but for some strong defending from player of the match Mitchell Clarke and Curtis Rollands and fine saves from keeper Naill Barnes the score of 0-0 at the interval could have been much worse. The second half saw Bury come out stronger and they soon took the lead. Roach never stopped working and despite some good wing play from Harrison Kilroy and Charlie Redford couldn’t find the back of the net. Bury then took command of the game. A free kick gave keeper Barnes no chance and despite good work from Daniel Wright, Lee Bagshaw and Roche, it was not to be. The visitors scored a third from outside the box to seal the game 3-0.
Under 9’s
The under 9’s started this match at a ferocious pace with the objective of keeping another clean sheet. Roach scored the first through Ethan Wade-Young after a neat passing move and a cross from Charlie Beswick. Owen Whitehead and Robbie Brown controlled the defence and this allowed the team to create plenty chances. Beswick grabbed Roach’s second and Wade-Young completed his hat trick before half time. In the second period, Rowley made it 5-0, Kieran Hill then scored the goal of the game, a 20 yard free kick into the top corner, and Beswick rounded off a convincing 7-0 victory. Whitehaed was named player of the match for his part in keeping the clean sheet.
Under 12’s
The under 12s entertained Radcliffe Juniors on Sunday morning looking to continue their excellent form but the visitors started the brighter team which resulted in Scott Jones making a couple of comfortable saves. Roach then sprung into life with the commanding Nathan Redford dominating the midfield and moving the ball to the superb Adam Latham and Matt Buckley on the left and right of midfield. Radcliffe found it hard to cope with the movement of Roach and after some good saves by the Radcliffe keeper, Latham opened the scoring. This settled roach and they began to express themselves all over the park. Slick movement from the midfield allowed Latham to grab his second and third, then the floodgates opened. Matt Buckley got his reward with another sweet strike soon after. Callum Openshaw scored the first of his well deserved hat trick followed by a sweet strike from Jay Daley. Ben Talbot then added two in as many minutes followed by a goal from keeper Jones. Roach seemed to take their foot of the pedal for a period until George Nixon hit a thunderous strike from twenty yards which nestled in the right hand corner. Latham scored two more quick goals and Stuart Mercer finished of the scoring with a volley into the left hand corner. Player of the match was Nathan Redford
Under 13’s
The under 13’s took a break from the league to play Meadway Juniors in the cup. Roach were always in control and never once looked like losing & were ahead after only 5 minutes when Sean Bamforth headed home from a Kieran Burns corner. Burns doubled Roach’s lead soon after with a free kick that evaded everyone and sailed into the net. Roach took their foot off the gas and were nearly punished; only a fantastic save from Dave Stewart prevented a goal. The second half started like the first and Kieran Kelly scored a great free kick from just inside the opposition half. Ryan McSweeney added another two and Sam Kelly scored the goal of the game beating a man and firing into the top corner. Meadway did manage a consolation goal but Roach were well worthy of their 6-1 victory. Sean Bamforth who was outstanding throughout was named player of the match for the second week running.
Under 15’s
The under 15’s travelled to Boothstown at the weekend and looked out of the game as the home side took a 2-0 lead. Jamie Byrne and Adam Thomas were the scorers and Josh Smith was named player of the match for yet another consistent performance.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s went to the top of the table on Sunday after a fantastic performance at home against Woodbank. Andy Illingworth scored a fantastic goal on the hour, and followed it up with his second three minutes later. Roach now dominated the game and Jamie Diamond got the third soon after. Just before the final whistle, Adam Rowles rounded off a superb 4-1 victory with an awesome shot from 35 yards. Danny Wolstenholme was named player of the match after a classic performance at right back.
Under 17’s

Roach played the better football with their passing and moving a joy to watch at times but they could not finish the play with a goal. Defender James Rowley was named player of the match for his tackling and distribution throughout the game.
Open Age
The open age team got back to winning ways at home to Oldham Hulmenians on Saturday. The visitors took an early lead, but Roach dug in and earned a penalty that Conor Mullen followed in to level the game. The pressure from the home side paid off when they were awarded a second penalty on the half hour. Captain Andy Cain stepped up and coolly slotted the spot kick home to give Roach a half time advantage. In the second period, Mullen, for the second week running, scored a ‘blinder’ to further increase the lead, and then after a superb cross from Danny Burns, Ryan Constantine headed at the far post to make it 4-1. From the restart, the visitors pulled one back and then a lapse in concentration allowed them a third. Roach though held their nerve at the end and took the three points with a 4-3 victory. Match reports for 20th & 21st October
Under 7’s
The under 7’s travelled to Middleton looking to carry on their winning ways and from the kick off Roach stared brighter, but the home side struck twice in the first half and it could have been more but for some excellent keeping from Niall Barnes. In the second period, Roach looked back to their best, pinning Middleton back. Charlie Redford & player of the match Harrison Kilroy worked hard in midfield, Harry Roche came close to a goal and Michelle Clarke & Curtis Rowlands denied the home side more than once. Lee Bagshaw then pulled one back for the visitors after some good work from Daniel Wright, who also hit the woodwork soon after. A late penalty appeal was turned down and despite all the hard work, it summed up Roach’s day – it was not to be.
Under 9’s
George Rowley scored five goals in a 12-0 win for the under 9's against Walshaw Sports at the weekend, The first half was very quite with just two goals being scored by Kieran Hill & Rowley, but the second half was fantastic, not just because of the ten goals scored but the passing and movement and general football was fantastic. The others goals came from Sam Sweeney after some great closing down and hassling, Ethan Wade-Young with two super strikes and Charlie Beswick with two to finish off a match which was a joy to watch. The whole team are developing into a great footballing unit, and they were all jointly named as players of the match.
Under 10’s
The under 10’s played bridge colts on Saturday and started the game like a fast and furious train, but could not find the net until a great worked goal from a Thomas Fitzgerald cross to Gibson’s head who then looped it over the keeper. Roach played some lovely football, Harry Morley and Conor Sidebotham at the back and some great passing football played by Trent Simm and Jake Mansfield. Just before half time some fresh legs were brought on courtesy of Ronan Daly, Dillon Astin and Elliot Morgan who revitalised Roach to keep the 1-0 at Half time. Roach then took control of the second period, and with his best performance of the season so far Cameron Burke cleared any danger that came. Another fine header by player of the match Sam Gibson, and a fine placement into the top corner by Thomas Fitzgerald sealed a solid 3-0 win for Roach.
Under 12’s
The under 12s travelled to Pendlebury united on Sunday, full of confidence after the previous weeks victory. Roach came out of the blocks flying with Matt Buckley causing havoc down the right hand side of the park, and earning his reward opening the scoring with a sweet strike in to the right hand corner. Roach scored theirs and Buckley’s second with a great move that started from the back , Pendlebury started to come back into game but the back four of Sean Chapman Joe O'connor ,Sam Hardman and Nathan Walters stood firm and Roach started to build again with strong play from the midfield pairing of the outstanding Danny Ellis and Stuart Mercer. Adam Latham was now showing his class on the left hand side and he deservedly scored the third. There was no let up from Roach and an intelligent throw from keeper Scott Jones started the play and after some slick passing Jay Daley scored the fourth. Just before the break Callum Openshaw added a well deserved fifth. The second half started in the same vein with the introduction of Nathan Redford breaking up play and smart passing pushing Roach forward and allowing the excellent Ellis to push forward and secure his hat trick, now Roach over ran the home team allowing the superb front two of Daley and Openshaw to complete their hat tricks and secure a 13-0 victory.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s progressed to the next round of the cup after a comfortable win away at Pendlebury. James Sweetman put the visitors ahead after just seven minutes with a shot from forty yards. The home team pulled one back on the half hour, but just before the interval, Josh Greenhalgh restored Roach’s lead. In the second half, Roach dominated the game, playing some wonderful one touch football at times. Andrew Illingworth, who was busy throughout, scored his first, Danny Wolstenholme and Jamie Diamond grabbed one each within a minute, and Illingworth bagged his second five minutes later. The home side did get a late goal, but Roach were more than worthy of their 6-2 victory. Robert Leyden was named player of the match for his work rate and creativity in the Roach midfield.
Under 17’s
After not playing for two weeks, this was not going to be an easy game for the under 17’s and straight from the kick off, misplaced passes nearly cost Roach but they somehow managed to keep the Walshaw strikers out. Nearly every Roach attack ended in losing the ball outside the visitors’ 18 yard box instead of testing the keeper and all this added to a frustrating first half .The second period saw much of the same. A mix up in the defence and not clearing their lines led to the opening goal for Walshaw and as the home side pushed for the equaliser, the visitors doubled their lead to 2-0 with a 35 yard strike. Despite going down to ten men, Walshaw hung on to take all three points
Open Age
The open age chalked up a hat trick of defeats after a visit to Accrington Loyals on Saturday. Roach started well, playing some excellent football and deservedly took the lead through player of the match Conor Mullen, who scored a blinder, giving the home keeper no chance. Roach then looked to switch off, and Accrington equalised seven minutes later. In the second half, the home side then took the lead, and then Roach again started playing some better football, but they could not find the equaliser, and came away empty handed after a 2-1 defeat.

Match reports for 13th & 14th October
Under 7’s
Against Radcliffe at the weekend, the under 7’s had the benefit of an early goal when Charlie Redford converted a cross from Harry Roche. The lead was short lived as Radcliffe scored from a free kick two minutes later. Roach then pressed hard for a goal with shots from Daniel Wright, Harry Roche and Sam Mather all going close. In the second half the pressure continued but the Radcliffe keeper was in good form saving well after a run and shot from winger Lee Bagshaw. A goal finally came after Daniel Wright broke clear and side-footed past the advancing keeper. Roach keeper Niall Barnes then saved well and defenders Curtis and Mitchell were kept busy as Radcliffe pressed for an equaliser. However it was Sam Mather who scored for Roach after another breakaway. Radcliffe didn't give up and managed to score with two minutes left. Charlie Redford was named player of the match for Roach.
Under 8’s
The under 8’s played Bridge colts in a very evenly matched game, Roach started on the back foot but then started to find their rhythm and put Bridge on the defensive. Bridge then got a goal on the counter and Roach hit back almost immediately through Kai Miller. Both defences were on top in this game until a mistake from one of the Roach defender gave bridge a penalty and he slotted it away. Kai miller almost equalised in the last minute but bridge held on for the win. Jonathan Rand got man of the match for a superb performance in defence.
Under 9’s
Today was a day for local rivalries to be put to the test as the under 9's played Bridge Colts at home and they put in a winning performance winning 6-3, this was after falling behind twice. Once the boys had found their rhythm they started to play some good football in patches, Kieran Hill and Tom Nixon got Roach back level before Sam Sweeney put them in front with a super strike and Charlie Beswick increased the lead just before half Time, The second half was much like the first, good in patches, Bridge pulled a goal back before Charlie Beswick scored two more goals for his hat trick.
Under 13’s
The under 13's remain unbeaten in the league as they defeated early pace setters Meadway Juniors 3-1. Roach were quick out of the traps and found themselves a goal up after a thumping finish from Sean Bamforth. Meadway were shell shocked but found themselves back level when an attempted cross looped over Dave Stewart in goal and nestled in the far corner. Roach began to look nervous and were thankful for some smart saves from their keeper. 1-1 at half time and Roach were looking a bit shaky. The second half began like the first and with Roach having all the play. Roach found themselves back in front when top scorer Jack Greenhalgh found a yard of space in the box and in typical fashion made no mistake. Once again Meadway came back at the lads with a period of sustained pressure; however, the boys were not going to make the same mistake twice and defended superbly. Once again Liam Mottershead was having a blinder in centre midfield ably assisted by the tireless Kieran Burns. Roach’s hard work paid off when an excellent through ball from Mottershead found Bamforth who was hauled down in the box for a penalty. Up stepped Kieran Kelly who made no mistake from 12 yards to kill the game off. Man of the match could have gone to a few players but was awarded to Sean Bamforth who was excellent upfront, scoring one and making another and working non stop from start to finish, a great performance.

The under 7’s travelled to Westbury with high hope and from the off were the brighter and stronger team with midfielder Sam Mather, Harry Roche and Charlie Redford working hard to give Roach most of the possession. Some good chances were created by Roach with plenty of shots going wide, but five minutes from half time a great move saw Daniel Wright break through and smash home to put Roach in front. The second half saw Roach start the same with Harrison Kilroy coming close and hitting the bar with a low drive. Westbury had some good attacking moves but were easily stopped by some excellent defending by Lee Bagshaw and Curtis Rowlands making sure that keeper Niall Barnes had little to do. Under 9’s
The under 9’s played their first ever cup game on Saturday, and won the game comfortably, playing superb football and totally dominating throughout. Every player in the team, all nine, contributed to the 14-2 score line, with Robbie Brown earning a special mention as he hit a superb hat trick.
Under 13’s
The under 13's entertained newcomers to the league FC Bears at the weekend were quick out of the traps, 1-0 up within 5 minutes, a neat finish at the back post from Joe Leary. Roach were in complete control of the game but allowed their opponents a soft equaliser in their first attack. Roach, however, continued to dominate and were back in front when Kieran Kelly drilled home from a corner. From then on the home side never looked like throwing this lead away and scored a third before half time through James Steele. Roach really turned on the style in the second half with Liam Mottershead controlling the game superbly from Centre Midfield. Further goals from Kelly, Greenhalgh (2), Bishop and a cracker from the impressive Matty Bell on the left gave Roach a well deserved 7-1 victory. Player of the match was awarded to the outstanding Mottershead, whose work rate and passing were excellent throughout.
Under 16’s
After playing Kirkham Juniors in the same round of the County Cup last year, the under 16’s repeated the tie at home on Sunday. Last year it was 6-1 to the visitors, this year, the game was much closer. Roach won the midfield battle, and in a heated game, it was 0-0 at the interval. After the break, the visitors took the lead, but Roach battled hard, creating chances, and dominating in periods. As Roach looked for the goal, and played with four strikers, Kirkham made it 2-0 with just one minute to go, and progressed to the next round. Roach though should be proud of a fantastic all round battling and footballing team performance.
Open Age
The open age made the trip to Lancaster Boys in the County Cup, and despite playing some good football, and commanding the game in spells, the Heywood outfit found themselves 2-0 down at the interval. As the second period kicked off, the next goal was always going to be the clincher, and after just four minutes, the home side extended their lead. From then on, Roach looked like a beaten team and could not get their rhythm going at all. Danny Burns scored a great goal in the final minute, but Lancaster responded within seconds to seal the game 4-1. Max Law was solid in defence, and his clinical distribution earned him the player of the match accolade.

From the restart Bridge picked themselves up and pinned roach back in their own half, defenders Curtis Rowlands,Sam Mather and Lee Bagshaw worked hard along with keeper Niall Barns to keep the visitors out, but Bridge hit back to level the game. The second half brought more of the same with strikes from Harris Kilroy and Harry Roche coming close but bridge hit on the break twice to take the lead. Soon to follow was an undeserved own goal from Roach to round off what wasn't to be their day despite all there hard work and efforts from the lads, Lee Bagshaw was named player of the match after a great all round performance.
Under 8’s
The under 8's travelled to Pennine Juniors and came away on the wrong end of 3-0 result. Roach started the brighter after two previous poor performances and despite looking strong throughout the game, could not capitalise on their chances and conceded three sloppy goals. Adam Grimshaw nearly scored a 25 yard volley but Pennine keeper managed to get his hands to it and force a corner. Two players were outstanding throughout the game, Jordan Yates and Adam Grimshaw, and they shared the player of the match accolade.
Under 12’s
The under 12s entertained Radcliffe borough on Sunday morning, and what a game of football it turned out to be. Roach came out flying closing down the away team winning tackles, and moving the ball sharply creating chances for Openshaw and Gibson. Against the run of play Radcliffe took the lead with a well worked goal, and then within minutes after a dubious decision it was 2- 0 to the visitors. Roach could have let their heads go down but they started playing their football and were rewarded when Latham struck a sweet shot into the corner after good work from Ellis and Daley. In the second half Roach started off as they had finished the first with Redford cracking in a stunning volley from the edge of the area, The home side were now well in control and player of the match Gibson got his rewards that his effort deserved grabbing his hat trick of which his second was an unbelievable strike from 20 yards, Radcliffe to their credit kept going and managed to earn themselves a draw with a goal in the last minute to make it 5-5.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s were in Ramsbottom against Woodbank on Sunday, and looked jaded as they shred the points. Roach started well and were 2-0 ahead after ten minutes courtesy of Andrew Illingworth and Danny Wolstenholme, but lapses of concentration all over the pitch allowed the home side to get back into it, and at the interval it was all square. Woodbank then took the lead until Josh Greenhalgh and Andrew Bowe put Roach ahead once again, only for the home side to grab a late goal to finish the game 4-4. Adam Rowles was named player of the match for an outstanding display in the centre of the Roach defence.
Under 17’s
The under 17’s played host to Chadderton & started the game well but like in previous games they took their foot off the gas. The visitors got a free kick on the edge of the box and as the Roach keeper was setting up his wall they took a quick one to make it 1-0. A good interchange between Boyle and Rowley down the right led to a Chadderton defender bringing Rowley down on the edge of the box. He dusted himself off to take the free kick and smashed the ball into the net after a dummy by Boyle. At half time Roach made 3 subs and changed formation. Roach then started to play the football at a higher tempo and Chadderton couldn't cope. A lack in concentration let Chadderton back into the game and they scored to make it 2-1. Roach then pulled up their socks as they didn't deserve to be behind, attacked straight from the kick off. Ryan Alasandra with a good run down the left squared the ball for Lewis Kershaw to slide the ball home. Roach knew the game was there for the win and they grew in confidence. Two quick goals from Alasandra, one a sweet strike from the left to the opposite corner left the keeper with no chance to make it 4-2. Almost straight from the restart, Radcliffe scored to level the game, but Roach kept their shape and continued to dominate. Just past the hour, Anthony Hill put Roach ahead, and then ten minutes later extended the lead further. The under 7's started slowly away against a previously unbeaten Chadderton team and after five minutes the home team were a goal up after a goalmouth scramble, goalkeeper Niall Barnes having no chance. Roach then began to play better football but few chances were created. The second half was a different story, Roach attacked from the whistle, Daniel Wright, Harry Roche and Harrison Kilroy all going close. The move of the match was midway in the half; a long pass from Lee Bagshaw found Daniel Wright whose low drive was just wide of the post. Pressure continued with Charlie Redford and Sam Mather coming close but still a goal finally came, unfortunately for Roach, it was the home team who broke clear from their own box and scored. Roach still did not give up, with defender Curtis Rowlands having a late effort save by keeper. It was a great team performance by Roach but not with the result they deserved. Man of the match was Harry Roche.
Under 9’s
With two games in a week Roach where looking for maximum points and Middleton Colts were first up on Tuesday evening. The first goal came from a long clearance up field by Dylan Fearon which Ethan Wade Young latched onto and slotted under the advancing keeper, the second was a fine individual goal from Tom Nixon who skipped passed two defenders and poked the ball into the net. the third was a lob over the keeper from Charlie Beswick, and the fourth was another fine individual goal from Tom Nixon, Middleton scored two late consolation goals but Roach won the game 4 -2.
The second game was against Westbury and Roach started off like an express train with some great passing play and three early goals coming from George Rowley, Tom Nixon & Charlie Beswick, Roach where then awarded a penalty which Beswick slotted into the net. With the midfield of Kieran Hill and Tom Nixon winning every challenge it was only a matter of time before Roach scored again, this time a shot from outside the box by Tom Nixon evaded everyone and rolled into the net, Kieran Hill and Charlie Beswick with his Hat Trick finished off the convincing win and the final score was 7-2 to Roach.
Under 13’s
The under 13's travelled the short distance across town to play local rivals Heywood Rangers on Sunday. Roach started brightly, and despite the grass being far too long, were playing some neat football. Heywood were playing very direct but Roach’s back line were coping with the long ball very well. It was Heywood who struck first when a lucky deflection fell to one of their players 20 yards out and he drilled the ball past a stranded Dave Stewart in goal. Roach responded well and were rewarded for their pressure with a neat finish from Jack Greenhalgh. After working so hard to get back into the game the visitors then conceded a very sloppy goal that saw them head into the break 2-1 down. After a stern word at half time the Roach boys came out fighting and the second half was one way traffic as Roach searched for the equaliser. Not only were the lads having to cope with a terrible pitch but also had to deal with some shocking decisions from a very one sided referee. Roach were rewarded for their battling and commitment when a curling free kick from Kieran Burns on the right flew straight in. There was only going to be one winner now but Roach just couldn’t take their chance and the game ended 2-2. This was a great battling performance from the boys who scrapped and fought their way to a more than deserved point. Player of the match was given collectively to the whole team.
Under 16’s
The under 16’s hosted Seedfield on Sunday in the league and started well, Andrew Illingworth putting Roach ahead after just eight minutes. The home side looked well in control until a mad period allowed the visitors to score twice in as many minutes to go into half time in front. After the interval, Roach looked a far better side. Illingworth grabbed his second to level the game, and then Robert Leyden put them back in front. An injury to one of the Roach strikers saw Jamie Diamond enter the field of play, and the substitute was always a threat, scoring two goals to extend Roach’s lead further and seal the player of the match accolade. Illingworth claimed his hat trick to make it 6-2, and despite the visitors scoring two late goals, Roach were worthy of the three points with a 6-4 victory.
Under17’s
The under 17’s went into the game away at Walshaw park with high spirits after a good win last week. From the very first whistle Roach were on the attack and playing good football. Chance after chance went begging for them and against the run of play, Walshaw's first attack of the game led to a shock goal. Not letting their heads go down, the visitors got back in the game with a left footed shot from Ryan Smith. After the goal Roach stopped playing attractive football and lost their shape and were lucky to go into the break level. in the second half Roach turned on the style and showed how good they can play. They were totally dominating the game in midfield and when Tony Knight played the ball over the top for jack Taylor to run onto he made no mistake and slid it past the opposing keeper. From the kick off Walshaw went on the attack and equalised straight away. With Roach playing the better football it was only a matter of time before they were back in front. James Rowley heading in from a well worked corner to make the game 3-2. Roach failed to clear their lines and let Walshaw back into the game with a superbly struck volley. Disappointed at conceding another goal, Roach picked up the tempo. Ryan Allasandra lead by example with a winding run down the left to convert from close range. Alasandra got his second two minutes later and completed his hat-trick with a well taken solo goal from a tight angle. With the game safe Roach started to play some very exciting football. Aaron Boyle then finished off the scoring with a superb shot from the right to make it 7-3 to the visitors. Ryan Allasandra was named player of the match for the second week running with an awesome display on the wing and a well taken five minute hat-trick.
Open Age
The open age team entertained Chew Moor Brook (CMB) on Saturday, and met their match against a well drilled and organised football outfit. From the start the visitors played some great stuff but once the early storm had been weathered, Roach got into the game, only for CMB to score twice in a minute just before half time. As the second period got under way, the next goal was always going to be critical, and unfortunately for Roach, their opponents struck twice again within a minute of the restart to kill the game. Roach adjusted, and played some of their best football of the game, but to no avail, and CMB wrapped up a convincing 5-0 victory with a stunning free kick that left the Roach keeper with no chance. Mark Woodall was named player of the match for a relentless performance, leading the line and non stop effort throughout.
