The open age second team continued their push for promotion with a hard fought win over Rossendale on Saturday. For the first half hour, both teams battled hard, and chances were created at either end, but Roach took the lead when Ross Jones slid the ball past the opposing keeper. A penalty for the home side followed, but the Rossendale keeper guessed right and at the interval it remained 1-0. Ten minutes into the second period, Ryan Smith got free from his marker and doubled Roach’s lead. The visitors though fought back, and scored to make the last fifteen minutes interesting. The run in was not without incident as both teams fought for the points, but in the last minute as Roach attacked, a foul in the box gave Roach a second penalty. This time David Shackleton made no mistake, and secured all three points with a 3-1 victory. Nick Dawson was named man of the match for a solid captain’s performance at the heart of the Roach defence.
